We are approaching around the halfway mark of the Momentum ODI Cup 2020 and teams would be getting more conscious of their positions on the league table. We have the Lions taking on the Cape Cobras in this match. This is going to be the second time these two teams are playing against each other.
The first match saw the Lions win comfortably by 49 runs. The Lions have won two out of their three matches, comprehensively losing their most recent one against the Warriors. The Cape Cobras have been more inconsistent so far with two wins and two losses out of its four matches.
Can the Cape Cobras find a way past the Lions in this match?
Lions vs Cape Cobras Momentum ODI Cup 2020 is going to be played at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom on the 16th of February 2020.
The Lions would have been a bit disappointed at their result in the previous match. They were up against the Warriors, who are among the weaker sides of the tournament. A batting failure meant that the Lions could only get 221 in their fifty overs and were left with insufficient runs to try and defend.
Ryan Rickelton, the best batsman for the Lions so far, was run-out for 43 and the side could never really recover after that. Wihan Lubbe, Delano Poltgeiter, and Nono Pongolo managed to get some useful runs together which will raise hopes for more such performances moving forward.
We don’t like this batting lineup too much and think there is too much dependence on Ryan Rickelton at the moment.
Eight bowlers tried their best to get wickets and win the match for the Lions in the previous match but that did not happen. Aaron Phangiso, Wihan Lubbe, and Johannes Diseko were economical but it is clear that the Lions bowling attack is not going to blow anyone away. ‘
The bowling does not have real pace or a quality wrist-spinner to call upon.
These fundamental weaknesses of the side are going to show up more often than not.
Ryan Rickelton, Reeza Hendricks, Kagiso Rapulana, NJ Van den Bergh, Wihan Lubbe, Delano Potgieter, Nono Pongolo, Johannes Diseko, Eldred Hawken, Aaron Phangiso, MP Siboto.
The Cape Cobras also come into this match on the back of a big loss. The lost by 95 runs to the Titans while chasing down 302. Zubayr Hamza continued to have a brilliant season with 93 to his name but none of the other batsmen were able to contribute.
A poor start to the chase when Janneman Malan was out second ball derailed the Cape Cobras. Constant wickets after that and a run-rate that just kept on creeping upwards was all too much for the team to handle that crumbled under the pressure.
Notwithstanding the previous performance, we expect better from the Cape Cobras. They have Zubayr Hamza, Pieter Malan, Janneman Malan, Kyle Verreynne, and George Linde in the side. That is a very strong lineup with youth, talent, and power.
The Cape Cobras are bound to come up with better performances more often.
The bowling unit may not have performed as well as the Cape Cobras wanted but we are again inclined to look on their lineup with hope. Rory Kleinveldt, Thando Ntini, Nandre Burger, and Jason Smith give the Cape Cobras a solid bowling core with some useful all-rounders to chip in as needed.
The Cape Cobras have been quite inconsistent and that is a big worry but there is no denying the potential this team has.
Pieter Malan, Janneman Malan, Zubayr Hamza, Jonathan Bird, Kyle Verreynne, George Linde, Aviwe Mgijima, Rory Kleinveldt, Dane Piedt, Dane Paterson, Thando Ntini.
The team that wins the toss is going to want to bat first.

A beautiful clear day has been forecast in Potchefstroom on match day. There is next to no chance of rain and we should have some ideal conditions for cricket. The pitch is expected to be good for batting with plenty of runs in it. The bowlers are going to have to work hard to have any impact on this match.
We think a total of around 300 looks likely batting first.
We like the Cape Cobras team much better than the Lions. The current form of the Lions has been a bit better but we think that has been down to some outstanding individual performances covering up the team’s shortcomings. In the long run, the team with the fundamental flaws is going to get showed up and suffer.
Bet on the Cape Cobras to win.
