About the Match
The Lions suffered defeat against Titans by 46 runs after failing to chase down a stiff target of 230 runs; they are placed 4th with 16 points and will now take on Knights, who continue to be at the bottom of the table with just 5 points in their kitty, on 9th December at Potchefstroom. The Knights also lost their match against Cobras after failing to defend a modest 146 and although it’s practically curtains down for them this season, they will try to redeem themselves with a face-saving win. Both teams come here at the back of recent defeat and will be eager to make a comeback on Friday.
The bowlers put up a disappointing show against Titans as players like Viljoen, Pretorius, McGillivray and Eddie Leie went for more than 11 runs per over; although spinners Fortuin and Aaron Phangiso took 3 wickets between them, they couldn’t stop the opposition from posting 230 runs on board. Rassie van der Dussen continued with his brilliant form with the bat, scoring a quick fire 45 off 18 balls and partnered with Reeza Hendricks to post 53-run opening stand. All-rounders Temba Bavuma, Nicky van den Bergh and Hardus Viljoen tried to keep the scoreboard ticking but they fell short of the target by 46 runs.
In the match against Warriors, the bowlers successfully defended 157 runs thanks to a superb 3-16 by speedster Hardus Viljoen and good contribution by Dwayne Pretorius, who took 2 wickets. Spinners Eddie Leie and Bjorn Fortuin claimed 5 wickets between them to help win the match by a close 5 runs. Earlier, Rassie van der Dussen posted a well-made half-century while others like Reeza Hendricks, Mangaliso Mosehle and McGillivray played useful knocks to garner 157 runs.
The Lions have in-form batsmen and bowlers who can help the team move up the ladder with a much-needed win; they will need to pull up their socks and bring out the entire armoury if they want to keep their hopes alive.
When they met Lions recently, bowlers Theunis de Bruyn, Swanepoel, Schalkwyk and Merchant de Lange took a wicket each but ended up facing a challenging target of 182 runs; Petrus van Biljon, Leus du Plooy and Theunis de Bruyn kept the runs flowing with the others down the line crumbled under pressure. The batting line-up fought hard to cross the finish line but lost the match by 20 runs.
In their game against Cobras, the batsmen fell like a pack of cards batting first; although Patrick Kruger scored 42 and Theunis de Bruyn posted a well-made 52, with hardly any support from others like Rudi Second, Swanepoel, Dillon du Preez and Plooy, they were able to muster only 146 runs. It was a poor show by the bowlers as they proved to be very expensive and lost the match by a humiliating 8 wickets.
The players are down on morale after facing consecutive defeats and they are desperate for a saving grace; they will be determined to give their all and avenge the previously faced defeat against Lions.
The Knights have not been able to up their ante till now and are definitely the underdogs here; Lions on the other hand have a lot to lose and they look better placed to give a tougher fight and survive.
