Chepauk Super Gillies, the defending champions, are having a sorry 2018 season. In order to finish well in this edition, it is imperative for them to kick-start their campaign with a win in their next match which is against Lyca Kovai Kings at India Cement Company Ground, Tirunelveli. The middle part of the points table is particularly crowded with as many as four teams having 4 points each. Lyca Kovai Kings, too, are on four points with two wins in four games. Although there isn't anything extraordinary that depends on the outcome of the game, it could well be the turning point of Super Gillies' campaign. For Lyca Kovai Kings, there is a chance to rise from the fifth spot to the third spot if they manage to hand Chepauk Super Gillies yet another defeat in this tournament.
The Kovai Kings have had a mixed tournament so far with two wins and as many losses. Their first match in the tournament, against Karaikudi Kaalai, went down to the wire and was decided in the one-over eliminator. Lyca Kovai Kings held their nerve to garner two important points, something Chepauk Super Gillies is still struggling to get. Their second match was a high-scoring thriller where Dindigul Dragons chased down a mammoth total and they failed to chase a similar sort of total in their third game. They bounced back into the tournament by registering a strong win in their last match against Ruby Trichy Warriors.
Bowlers did a stupendous job in restricting Ruby Trichy Warriors to an extremely subpar score which they chased down quite comfortably in the end. Their bowlers had a near-perfect day with the ball with almost everyone chipping in and picking up wickets on a regular interval. Vignesh was brilliant up front and finished with 21 for 1 in his 4. Ajith Ram, too, bowled well in the early overs and was responsible for the dismissal of their captain Baba Indrajith. Their spinners were excellent in the middle overs where S Manigandan and Prasanth Rajesh spun their web of legspin and gave away only 37 runs in their 7 overs combined. They also picked up three wickets in the process.
It was an excellent batting surface and chasing 125 should not have been a daunting task for the Kings' batting and hence it proved to be. Shahrukh Khan and Abhinav Mukund killed the game with a brilliant opening partnership of 96. It was only a case of completing the formalities after that which the following batsmen did pretty well. Shahrukh Khan got out for 67 whereas skipper Abhinav Mukund saw the chase through with his unbeaten 42-run knock. Their openers have done the bulk of the scoring for the Kings in the competition and will play a vital role in the upcoming match as well.
Abhinav Mukund, Shahrukh Khan, Antony Dhas, Ravi Kumar Rohith, Akkil Srinaath, Ashwin Venkataraman, S Manigandan, M Prasanth Rajesh, S Ajith Ram, Krishnamoorthy Vignesh, T Natarajan.
Chepauk Super Gillies have looked to be an entirely different team without Rajagopal Sathish and are struggling to justify their defending-champions tag. They've lost three games in as many matches and haven't looked convincing in any of those.
Their last match was against Karaikudi Kaalai which they lost by a hefty margin of 47 runs. CSG didn't start well with the ball and conceded 52 runs in the powerplay with Srikanth Anirudha tearing through their bowlers. Murugan Ashwin was taken away for 42 runs in his four overs and R Vishal conceded 35. They both failed to dismiss any of Kaalai's batsmen. Poor bowling performance and ordinary fielding meant that they needed to chase 193 runs, which wasn't going to be easy by any stretch of the imagination.
Their climb got steeper when Ganga Sridhar Raju departed without troubling the scorers on only the second delivery of their innings. Sunny Kumar Yadav followed his partner back to the pavilion after 18 runs. Gopinath and Sasidev stitched a good partnership of 55, but Sasidev's departure slowed their innings down and they eventually finished with just 146 runs on the board in their allotted 20 overs. Batting has been a big cause of concern for the team's think tank thus far and they'd need to put up an extraordinary performance to get back into the competition from here.
Ganga Sridhar Raju, YS Kumar Singh, H Gopinath, Uthirasamy Sasidev, S Karthik , S Harish Kumar, Murugan Ashwin, Baskaran Rahul, R Alexander, B Arun, R Vishaal.
Chennai Super Gillies have not lived up to the expectations thus far and considering the way things panned out for them in their last two fixtures, it isn't going to be easy for them. In relation to their performance, the performance of Lyca Kovai Kings have been superb with both batting and bowling contributing in their last match. The Kings have been a better team in the competition thus far and are apparently more likely to emerge on top in their next match, against Chennai Super Gillies.
