The eliminator will feature the two teams that played out perhaps the most exciting game of the group stages which ended in a tie and had to be decided via a super over. The Lyca Kovai Kings will be taking on the Idream Karaikudi Kaalai in a match the promises to go down to the wire once again. Both the teams have qualified with a very similar record of 4 wins from seven matches. They were separated from their rivals by net run-rate and know that they could have just as easily missed out.
Now that they have a chance to progress, though, we expect to see them come out all guns blazing.
Needing to win big in its last match brought out the best of the Lyca Kovai Kings. They decimated the Siechem Madurai Panthers and romped home to victory with eight wickets in hand. It is the kind of performance that would have made their opponents notice and there is no question about the confidence in the Panthers camp being sky high.
The Lyca Kovai Kings will be hoping that its players can play with the same fire in these closing stages of the tournament. T Natarajan has been bowling near his best and is making a big difference to the side. His economy rate for the entire tournament is an unheard of 4.43! That is good in ODI’s, forget T20 cricket.
Natarajan, Manigandhan, Ajith Ram, Rajesh, and Vignesh form a very decent bowling attack. Most of the bowlers in this list are going for just about a run a ball. This means that the pressure on the opposition never lets up and they are forced into making errors that they normally would not.
The fulcrum of the batting has been Shahrukh Khan with 307 runs in the tournament. He is easily the most important batter in the side and his wicket is going to be very important. If the Lyca Kovai Kings lose Shahrukh Khan early while chasing a big total then the others around him might just crumble.
Mukund, Venkatraman, and Rohith have played a few good innings but the Kings would not want to depend solely on one of these players in a crunch match like this.
Shahrukh Khan, Abhinav Mukund, Ravi Kumar Rohith, Ashwin Venkataraman, M Prasanth Rajesh, Antony Dhas, S Ajith Ram, Krishnamoorthy Vignesh, T Natarajan, Akkil Srinaath, R Mithun.
Two losses in its last two matches would not have helped the confidence of Karaikudi Kaalai coming into this match. They need to put these losses out of their mind and concentrate on the good performances that have put them in this position.
In Srikanth Aniruddha, Karaikudi Kaalai has one of the most dangerous batsmen in this entire tournament. He has scored 336 runs to his name but recorded only two fifties so far. This shows that he gets big runs when he gets in but can be nipped out early as well.
Crucially, no other batsman from the side has recorded a fifty in the tournament so far. It is not far from the truth to say that Karaikudi Kaalai is Srikanth Aniruddha or bust. The team does have a few good players who it can hope for some runs from like Aditya, Shajahan, Bafna, and Srinivasan but none of them are in very good form.
Thankfully, Srikanth Aniruddha is one for the big stage and we would not rule out a blistering performance from him at this stage.
The bowling for Karaikudi Kaalai is decent. Yo Mahesh, Mohan Prasath, Swaminathan, and Rajkumar have decently in the tournament. How they go against the Lyca Kovai Kings batting is going to be decisive because one feels the Karaikudi Kaalai batting is not going to be able to chase down a huge target.
The ideal situation for the team would be to win the toss, bat first, set the opposition a big target, and then let its bowlers take over.
V Aditya, S Anirudha, Rajhamany Srinivasan, Maan Bafna, M Shajahan, R Kavin, Yo Mahesh, R Rajkumar, S Kishan Kumar, V Lakshman, S Mohan Prasath.
The team winning the toss is likely to bat first
Tirunelveli is going to host the eliminator and we are hoping for a good batting pitch to allow a fair contest. The pitch in recent times has become slow and can make the match very much in favor of the bowling side. The weather forecast is for some rain in the morning but it should clear out by the time this match gets underway.
A score of around 160 should be considered par.
We are backing the Lyca Kovai Kings to win.
