With T20 Cricket getting popular across the globe, Women's cricket is gaining in popularity as well, albeit not with the same pace. Women's Cricket has received its fair share of matches in both Big Bash League and Indian Premier League which has only added to its popularity. Kia Women's Cricket League is set to begin on 6th August with the first match of the tournament to be played between Lancashire Thunder and Southern Vipers which will then be followed by the match between Lancashire Thunder and Southern Vipers that is to be played at Haslegrave Ground, Loughborough.
Coming into the tournament as the favorites yet again, Loughborough Lightning are the runners-up of the last edition of the competition. They won seven matches out of ten in the league stage of the previous edition and will be looking to shrug off the loss in the last year's final and go all the way this time around.
Although they do not have big names on their squad list, they did a pretty decent job as a team last year. Captained by Georgia Elwiss, they have a pretty decent and well-balanced lineup which goes deep and have plenty of options available with the ball.
The edition of Chamari Athapaththu has strengthened their batting lineup, which is well complemented by their superb bowling attack and like in the last season, they will be a difficult side to defeat once again.
Amy Ellen Jones, Chamari Atapattu, Georgia Adams, Georgia Elwiss, Hayley Matthews, Jenny Gunn, Kathryn Bryce, Kirstie Gordon, Lucy Higham, Mignon du Preez, Sarah Glenn.
Western Storm were right behind Loughborough Lightning in the points table in the last edition. They won six out of ten matches with one of those resulting in a no-result due to inclement weather conditions.
On paper, they have arguably the best side in the tournament with the likes of English skipper Heather Knight, Rachel Priest, and Smriti Mandhana at their disposal; they have a terrific batting attack. Smriti Mandhana was the player of the tournament in the last edition and will be looking to repeat the same this time around.
All in all, they have a super good side with excellent fire-power available in their batting lineup and a good number of varieties available in the bowling attack. They have an excellent amalgamation of pace and spin attack available and will be one of the hardest team to beat in the tournament.
Heather Knight, Fran Wilson, Freya Davies, Rachel Priest, Smriti Mandhana, Deepti Sharma, Danielle Gibson, Sophie Luff, Claire Nicholas, Naomi Dattani, Alex Griffiths.
Women's Super League is a small tournament with each team playing each other only once, making every point of significant importance. The two teams locking horns tomorrow were the last top-two teams last year, and the contest between them is expected to be mouth-watering. On paper, Western Storm are slightly better placed as compared Loughborough Lightning and are, therefore, better placed to emerge on top in the upcoming fixture.
