The Pakistan Super League is going to start on the 20th of February. We are thrilled because we believe it is one of the highest-quality leagues out there. Unlike a lot of other franchise competitions, the teams here tend to be strong in the bowling department and so the batting is often the differentiator between them.
One of the finalists of PSL 2020, the Lahore Qalandars, is going to be starting against Peshawar Zalmi, one of the most successful sides in PSL history. The Qalandars have gone from being a joke in the PSL to one of the pre-tournament favorites.
Can Peshawar Zalmi cause an upset to start PSL 2021?
Lahore Qalandars vs Peshawar Zalmi PSL 2021 is going to be played at the National Stadium, Karachi on the 21st of February 2021.
Among a tournament with some staggeringly strong bowling lineups, the Lahore Qalandars have to be right up there with the best. They boast of some of the best T20 bowlers in the world and are going to pose a tough challenge to all their opponents.
Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Dilbar Hussain will be the three first-choice fast bowlers while Rashid Khan is going to play in the PSL for the first time and join the Lahore Qalandars. These are four international quality bowlers to lead the attack!
The fifth bowler’s quota is likely to be filled by the all-rounders. Mohammad Hafeez, David Wiese, and Samit Patel can all contribute in this area.
Now let us come to the batting.
Mohammad Hafeez has a point to prove. He was left out of the Pakistan side against South Africa even though he has been Pakistan’s best batsman in this format for quite some time now. He is going to be hungry to prove the selectors wrong.
Sohail Akhtar and Joe Denly are the other leading batsmen of the side. Akhtar did well in the previous season of the PSL and Denly is pretty dangerous as well. A lot of attention will also be on Fakhar Zaman.
The celebrated Pakistan opener is out of favor and out of the team after a prolonged lean run. He will need to work very hard to get back into the frame of things but this PSL could be a great opportunity.
A healthy availability of all-rounders adds some depth to the side.
Salman Mirza, Ben Dunk, Fakhar Zaman, Sohail Akhtar, Mohammad Hafeez, D Wiese, Agha Salman, Shaheen Afridi, Rashid Khan, Ahmed Daniel, SR Patel.
Peshawar Zalmi is one of the most successful teams in the history of the PSL and a poor 2020 will not deter them. They also have a very good set of players to work with although their team balance is quite different from what the Lahore Qalandars possess.
The bowling lineup is going to be led by Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Irfan, and Mujeeb ur Rahman. An excellent bowling lineup, although, not as strong as what Lahore Qalandars have.
We know that Wahab Riaz can be quite expensive but is a proven wicket-taker. Mujeeb is very good in the power-play and but will find it a bit tough against some excellent players of spin. Mohammad Irfan is 38 years old and not quite the same force that he was at his peak.
The role of the all-rounders like Ravi Bopara, Amad Butt, and maybe Shoaib Malik is going to be pretty significant in this lineup.
The batting for Peshawar Zalmi is quite good, though.
David Miller just played a brilliant inning in Pakistan and is in good form. He will be an integral part of the lineup that also features Haider Ali (Pakistan’s first-choice T20 opener), Kamran Akmal ( a domestic and PSL giant), Imam ul Haq, Faf du Plessis, Ravi Bopara, Shoaib Malik, and Sherfane Rutherford if he can get a game.
There is a lot of power, experience, and T20 dynamism in this team.
Kamran Akmal, Haider Ali, Sherfane Rutherford, Imam-ul-Haq, RS Bopara, Shoaib Malik, Amad Butt, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Wahab Riaz, Saqib Mahmood, Mohammad Imran.
The team that wins the toss is going to want to field first. History shows that chasing is a huge advantage in Karachi and that should be taken into account when placing your PSL bets.
Read our guide on toss predictions to learn how we analyze and come up with our tips.
The conditions are going to be flat and good for batting. There is no threat of rain and so we should get an uninterrupted match to enjoy. The outfield is fast and the ball will travel to the boundary very quickly. We do think that the spinners will get a bit of help but nothing that is going to overly concern the batsmen.
A score of around 170 should be considered par.

Lahore Qalandars are the favorites going into this match. It is easy to see why but we think there may be more value in backing Peshawar Zalmi here. We think they have a better batting unit and could start with a win, particularly if they win the toss.
Our advice is to wait for the toss and then back Peshawar Zalmi if they are fielding first.
Bet on Peshawar Zalmi to win.
This is our favorite bet for this match by far! Just look at the quality of bowlers on both sides. It is quite easy to think that there will be one over where a couple of wickets fall and the batsmen have no option but to consolidate.
A return of almost 5x for this bet is just bonkers! Take it!
As we mentioned, Hafeez is the best T20 batsman in Pakistan as per the records of the last couple of years. He has been batting aggressively, hits plenty of sixes, and has a point to prove. We are very comfortable backing him to hit at least one six and doubling our money!
