Madurai Super Giants
Chasing 178 runs against Gillies, the batting line-up collapsed and they lost the match by 55 runs; although Arun Karthik did well by scoring 34 off 28, he couldn’t keep the momentum going and the others failed to support. Earlier, the bowlers took regular wickets but gave away too many runs. Muruganatham took a crucial wicket and was the most disciplined of the lot while Kennedy helped stifle the opponents; Vignesh took 2-28 but others proved to be costly.
In the match against Warriors, Chandran led from the front as he posted a heroic 53 from 37 deliveries while Suresh Kumar and opener Thiyagarajan supported well with the bat to take the total to 135. However, the bowlers found it difficult to stop the Warriors from reaching the meagre total despite Bafna, Muruganatham and Chandrasekar taking a wicket each at regular intervals.
Although they have good resources, they haven’t been able to convert their good efforts to wins till now; they can try to do better and score a consolatory victory on Tuesday.
The bowlers put up a superb show against Warriors as they restricted the opponents to 145 runs; medium-pacer Aswin Christ took 3-19 to cause heavy upsets while Davidson, Sundar and Srinivas took 4 wickets between them. The chase was dominated by Gandhi, who came out blasting an unbeaten 80 off 49 to steer the team safely towards victory; Sushil and Nathan combined well and supported the opener in achieving the target with 21 balls to spare.
Against Veerans too, it was the bowlers who won half the battle as Lakshmipathy Balaji took an astounding 5-18 to demolish the opponent’s batting efforts. Sundar yet again supported well as he took 2-21 and with a target of 142 to win, Gandhi, Mukund and Sundar kept the scoreboard ticking and helped register an easy win by 6 wickets.
The Patriots have fought hard to stay alive and they have good match-winners with bat and ball; with a strong determination and talented players, they can surely try to make it to the semi-finals.
While Super Giants are out of contention, they will try to redeem themselves with a win here and put up a fierce contest; however, we feel that Patriots, who need a win in the upcoming match, have good performers who can overcome the challenges and emerge victorious on Tuesday
