About the Match
It would be an interesting day in Big Bash League as the two teams from Melbourne clash in Melbourne Derby on January 9th, 2016. The Meloburne Stars take on the Renegades in this all-important encounter to be played at Docklands Stadium Melbourne. Chris Gayle will return to the Renegades' squad after being involved in a major controversy. Renegades, the home team, is currently placed second from the bottom as far as points table is concerned. On the other hand, the Stars have been slightly better as they've emerged victorious on three outings from the total of five. A win for Renegades will take them on par with Stars as far as ladder is concerned whereas a win for the visitors will take them to second place on table currently held by Scorchers only to be separated by Net Run Rate. Stars and Renegades derbies have always been exciting and we don't expect this one to be any different.
Chris Gayle will make his comeback into the squad after being involved in a controversy which will be a boost for Renegades' batting lineup considering the form Chris Gayle was in. The Renegades bowled brilliantly in their last game as they restricted Hobart Hurricanes to a total of just 140 runs. While chasing the total, Chris Gayle hammered 41 runs off 15 balls to provide the chasers a flying start. His partner, Aaron Finch, played a quick as well as anchoring innings of 60 runs in just 39 deliveries to guide Renegades home with six overs to spare. With explosive players like Cameron White and Dwayne Bravo in the squad, chasing or setting targets has never been a difficulty with the team. The Renegades will be a tough team to beat especially in their familiar territory.
The Stars too are coming on the back of a victory against Hobart Hurricanes. Their bowlers did wonderfully well in restricting the Hurricanes to a modest total of 124 runs. After bowlers performed well, Luke Wright and Glenn Maxwell provided a fitting finish to the game as they cruised to the total with five Overs to spare. Stars have been playing well and with Peter Handscomb and Glenn Maxwell playing well in the middle order. With the experience of Hussey & Co. in the batting coupled with Beer, Hastings and Hilfenhaus in the bowling, the Stars look a tough team to beat. They've been playing well and it would be a tough ask for Renegades in this Melbourne derby.
Chris Gayle has played a vital part in most of the Renegades' victories, but it remains to be seen how he performs after the controversy. Both the sides are coming after the victories against the hurricanes, thanks to their bowling. With the likes of Gayle and Finch opening the innings, it would be tough to stop Renegades. However, I think that the experience and form of Pietersen, Maxwell, Hussey will guide the visitors home in this all-important clash.
