About the Match
Melbourne Stars continue to be the leaders this season with 8 points in their kitty and NRR of +2.520 while the Strikers slipped to fourth position with 5 points and NRR of +0.191 after being overtaken by the Sixers, who defeated them in the last match by 6 wickets. Stars will host the Strikers on 9th Jan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where the two sides will play each other for the first time in this edition of the Big Bash League. It’s expected to be quite an exciting game as both teams have hard-hitters and bowlers who can change the game anytime to turn the match in their favor.
In a match dominated by the batsmen, the Stars smashed away sixes and fours to defeat the Renegades by 9 wickets with more than 3 overs remaining; set with a target of 164 runs, Cameron White posted an unbeaten 84 runs off 49 deliveries and along with Maxwell took his team to another win. Adding 98 runs for the second wicket from 50 deliveries, the duo displayed aggressive batting and snatched the match away from the opponents to maintain their lead on the points table. Earlier, Jackson Bird demolished the Renegades battling line-up taking 3 wickets, out of which two were duck-out on consecutive deliveries while Hastings and Malinga took a wicket each. However, the bowlers weren’t able to stop Finch and Cooper and gave away too many runs in the middle; the batsmen delivered to perfection and won the match for the team. The team is charged up with their performance so far and they are yet to lose a match, which speaks volume about their team composition and determination of its players.
The batsmen weren’t as sharp as before and this cost them the match against Sixers who defeated them by 6 wickets in the last encounter; choosing to bat first, the openers failed miserably and the top order collapsed with just 32 runs on board. Shakib and Reardon posted an 80-run partnership for the 5th wicket to steady the innings and take them to a decent total of 149 runs. However, the bowlers couldn’t defend this meager total against the Sixers and though Shaun Tait took the early wicket of Maddinson, Shakib found success with 2 wickets much later. While Richardson also claimed a wicket, the damage had already been done and the Sixers sailed away comfortably to a win. The team has slipped to the 4th position and will need to perform better in upcoming matches if they want to keep their campaign alive here.
Melbourne Stars haven’t lost a match yet in the league and look confident to continue on their winning spree; on the other hand the Strikers suffered their first defeat in the league and will be eager to make up for the lost points. The competition has heated up and both sides will look forward to dominate the other and win convincingly; while the Strikers do have good resources, it will be difficult for them to beat the Stars in their own backyard.
