In the opening match of the league against the Melbourne Renegades, the Stars had registered a convincing win by a huge margin of 76 runs; Luke Wright thundered away to 70 runs off 32 balls while White posted 53 off 38 deliveries. The duo gave the team a partnership of 95 runs by the 9th over and the rest of the batsmen kept the scoreboard ticking. While Hodge made 30 off 19 balls, David Hussey, Maxwell and Stoinis contributed well to take the total to 208 runs, which was well defended by the bowling unit. Jackson Bird topped the bowling figures with 4-31 while McKay made early in-roads by taking the wicket of Doolan in the 3rd over and returning to take the last wicket of the opposition in the 18th over. Hastings and Wright got a wicket each and it was a collective effort by the team to score the first win of the season. They will bring out their best once again in the upcoming match and this team is a formidable force to reckon with.
In the previous match against the Thunders, Maddinson’s quick 61 off 40 balls led the side to a comfortable win with 10 balls to spare. He built the innings with Smith, who scored 22 runs off 24 balls and made sure that the team would reach the target easily. Though the duo couldn’t survive till the end; Bopara and Henriques posted a steady 50-run partnership to take the team home safely. Earlier, Henriques also delivered with the ball by claiming 2 wickets and with great support from Cosgrove, Bopara, Hazlewood and Lee who took a wicket each at regular intervals, the bowling unit restricted the opponents to 166 runs, which the batsmen achieved without much difficulty. The team needs to gear up for stiffer competition that’s yet to come and they will need to pull up their socks for the upcoming contest against the Melbourne Stars who are ahead of them in NRR.
The Sixers have the home advantage and will be eager to win this match by putting up a good performance on the field; the Stars will not make it easy for the hosts and are a difficult side to beat. Both teams have good resources and could turn the match in their favor; however, the Stars with their superior batting prowess are likely to win this match and become front-runners in the competition.
