IPL 2019 has been great so far. There have been a ton of great matches, some excellent performances from young upcoming players, and better tactics from most of the teams involved. After all this, though, we are going to have yet another Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings IPL Final!
The two teams that finished at the top after the group stages have now managed to make their way into the IPL 2019 final and will be playing against each other for the fourth time this season.
The Mumbai Indians have won all three matches against the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2019 prior to this one. Both the teams are used to being in the IPL final. They have each won the title three times in the past, the most for any side.
Mumbai Indians have reached the IPL final a total of four times before this one. The only time they did not win was against the Chennai Super Kings in 2010. The Chennai Super Kings have reached the IPL final a staggering seven times before this year. They have lost three out of their last four IPL finals including two to Mumbai Indians.
The venue for the IPL 2019 Final is the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. Why team will add a fourth crown to its name?
There is something about the Mumbai Indians side that trips up the Chennai Super Kings. Mumbai has dominated this rivalry in the recent past and has an overall advantage of 17-12 after 29 matches. More importantly, Mumbai has won seven out of the last eight matches against the Chennai Super Kings.
Mumbai has been quite consistent with its selections this year and we don’t think we are going to see too many changes. Jayant Yadav was picked for the previous match against Chennai on a pitch that was sure to aid spin. He is the only player that may be replaced in favor of someone like Mitchell McClenaghan.
The surface in Hyderabad has been excellent for batting and the venue would have had some time to be able to prepare for the IPL 2019 final as well. Mumbai Indians have a strong batting lineup that has not played to its potential so far.
Rohit Sharma, Quinton de Kock, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, and Kieron Pollard make a very strong batting lineup. Any one of these players can play a match-winning inning and most have already done that in this year’s IPL as well.
Against the spin-heavy Chennai bowling lineup, Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav seem to be the players that stand out as having the best chance to succeed. We also think that Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard could be two players to watch out for in this match. They both have been in good form and will like the true batting surface that Hyderabad has served up in recent times.
Rohit Sharma, Quinton de Kock, SA Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Krunal Pandya, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Rahul Chahar, MJ Mcclenaghan, Lasith Malinga, JJ Bumrah.
Call them the ‘Dad’s army’ or whatever else you like but MS Dhoni and the Chennai Super Kings are IPL beasts. They have made another IPL final and will now face their toughest test.
The Chennai Super Kings have been found out by Mumbai on all the three occasions they have played against them. Now, with the final, MS Dhoni might want to do a few things to ensure Mumbai does not prevail again.
The team that Chennai selected for the previous match is the one that we expect to see play in this match as well. Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson performed well with the bat to underline the importance of having experienced players in the side.
Watson has been in poor form but getting some runs under his belt would have made him feel a lot better ahead of the IPL 2019 final. If Chennai has to get past Mumbai then another big contribution from Watson and du Plessis is a must.
Overall, the Chennai batting still remains weak. Suresh Raina, Amabati Rayadu, and MS Dhoni don’t fill us confidence. It is easy to see Chennai struggle to get momentum in their inning if the openers fall quickly.
The bowling has to be the one to win this match for Chennai. Harbhajan Singh is bowling at his best, Imran Tahir is always a threat, Ravindra Jadeja has given the least boundaries per number of balls bowled in the entire tournament, and Deepak Chahar has been the most economical bowler in the powerplay.
If there is any bowling attack that can tame the Mumbai batting then it is Chennai’s.
Faf du Plessis, SR Watson, SK Raina, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni, Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja, Harbhajan Singh, Deepak Chahar, SN Thakur, Imran Tahir.
The team winning the toss would like to bat second. Hyderabad has been a high scoring venue where defending a total has not been easy. There is also a worry that dew could come in the second inning and make bowling difficult.

The IPL final 2019 Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings is going to be played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. There is no chance of rain on match day and humidity is also expected to be lower than what we have seen in previous matches.
The pitch in Hyderabad has been good for batting. There is some good bounce in the pitch and the ball comes nicely on to the bat. Spinners can play a role as the game progresses especially if there is no dew around.
The Dream11 team for the IPL 2019 Final should be a bit easier to make because we know which players have been doing well so far. The pitch in Hyderabad is good for batting with spinners also playing a big role in some matches. Please follow @cricketbettings on twitter for updates to the Dream11 picks after the pitch report and toss.
Wicketkeeper: MS Dhoni's form seems to have cooled off a little bit while Quinton de Kock has continued to score runs freely. The South African is also very good against medium pace bowling, which is what Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur bowl. He is a little vulnerable against spin but that is a risk we are willing to take.
Batsmen: We have picked Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Shane Watson, and Faf du Plessis in our side for this match. Rohit Sharma loves batting in Hyderabad, has played a lot IPL cricket here in the past and knows how to handle the pressure of a big match. He is also very good against spin. Suryakumar Yadav is in good form while Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson are big match players as well. The Chennai opening pair is a must-have if Chennai is batting first although we may substitute Watson for Rayadu is Chennai is batting second.
All-rounders: Hardik Pandya has been the most impactful player in this category alongside Andre Russell. The surface at Hyderabad is one where he will enjoy both batting and bowling. We have picked him alongside Ravindra Jadeja in this category. We did not pick Krunal Pandya, although, the pitch report could force that change later.
Bowlers: There are three excellent spinners in this category and we have picked them all. Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir, and Rahul Chahar have had an excellent IPL 2019. All three of them are genuine wicket-takers that are in good form. The last remaining bowling spot goes to Lasith Malinga. The Sri Lankan fast bowler has been a bit patchy but continues to pick up important wickets. A player of his experience is a good one to have in the side in a big final.
Captain and vice-captain: We have picked Rohit Sharma as the captain and Faf du Plessis as the vice-captain in this match.
Mumbai Indians are clearly the better side in this contest. They have a stronger batting lineup and a bowling attack which is as good as Chennai’s. However, MS Dhoni is a shrewd character that leads his side from the front. This could be last IPL if he chooses to retire after the ICC World Cup 2019. Dhoni is destiny’s child and we don’t think he is going to bow out with a loss.
Back Chennai Super Kings to win.
