MI vs CSK Match Prediction - Sep 19, 2020

It is finally here! IPL 2020 is about to start in the UAE after months of uncertainty and a lot of last-minute planning. The first match of the Indian Premier League this season is going to be played between the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings. MI and CSK were the finalists in 2019, a classic that saw MI scrape home by just one run in the end.

The IPL has been played in South Africa and the UAE in previous years as well. Getting cricket-ready after a long layoff is perhaps, going to be the greater challenge than the change in the venue.

Neither team is going to be too affected by the lack of availability of Australian and English players for the first week of the IPL so that is a good thing as well.

MI vs CSK IPL 2020 is going to be played at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi on the 19th of September 2020.

MI vs CSK Team Previews

Mumbai Indians

Everyone is going to talk about the five matches that the Mumbai Indians have played and lost in the UAE but we are not sure if that really matters. That was in 2014 and we just don’t think it applies. India has won the Asia Cup in the UAE after that where Rohit Sharma was one of the best performers.

He is going to lead the batting once more and possibly open the batting alongside Quinton de Kock, as he did last season. Rohit Sharma has had a quiet time in the IPL over the last couple of years and made just 405 runs in 2019. That is a good return but not for someone like Rohit who is a white-ball legend for India.

BOOSTED ODDS

Betway has a boosted odd going on right now for Rohit Sharma to hit a six. The market is at 2.50 instead of 1.50. We think this is a good bet to take. Go to Betway to place the bet.

Quinton de Kock made 529 runs and Suryakumar Yadav made 424 runs in the previous season.

These are three that MI will start IPL 2020 with.

We believe the number four batting position is up for grabs. Ishan Kishan batted their for the most part but did not make it his own. MI could choose to add Chris Lynn to the op-order and maybe shift Rohit down the order in the past (unlikely) or just start with Kishan.

Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, and Hardik Pandya form the powerful core of this team. Pollard has been in scintillating form and looks better than ever before. He is going to be one of the trump cards for MI this season.

That leaves the four bowlers.

Rahul Chahar did enough to warrant a start while Jasprit Bumrah is an automatic selection. Trent Boult and Mitchell McClenaghan could be the other bowlers that MI goes for.

This is a very strong lineup with almost every base covered. The depth in spin bowling and the number 4 batting position are the only potential weaknesses that we can see.

Chennai Super Kings

CSK evokes more emotion than any other IPL team among its followers. It is going to be very interesting to see how the franchise lines up after almost winning the title two years in a row. MS Dhoni is now retired from international cricket, Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh are not playing this edition for personal reasons, and a number of their players seem to be aging.

Josh Hazelwood and Sam Curran are not expected to be available either for CSK for the first two matches because of quarantine restrictions.

CSK loves to keep things stable and so we can get a good idea of what they will do by just looking back.

We are sure that Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis are going to open the batting for Chennai in the first match. Watson is a notoriously slow starter and takes time to get into the flow of things. He is, however, still a force with the bat and can be asked to bowl when needed as well. He is, however, 39 years of age and past his peak as a player.

Du Plessis likes to pen the batting and is pretty good against the spinners as well. He is probably the Super Kings’ best batsman but at 36 years of age, he is no spring chicken either.

Ambati Rayadu could slide up to number three in Raina’s absence and MS Dhoni may choose to come at number 4 as well. We could also someone like Ravindra Jadeja or Kedar Jadhav at 4 if needed.

This is not the strongest batting lineup. It is filled with players that are good against spin but who are all past their best.

Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, and maybe Mitchell Santner are the possible all-rounders that will lineup in the lower-middle order. Not too much hitting power here either.

CSK may not want to play Santner and Jadeja together so Piyush Chawla/Karn Sharma may take the place either. That leaves Lungi Ngidi and Deepak Chahar to start IPL 2020 with Imran Tahir as the pure spinner.

The bowling attack is strong and will challenge Mumbai Indians but the batting looks underpowered.

MI vs CSK Toss Prediction

The team that wins the toss may want to field first just to see what the pitch has on offer. We don't think the surface is gong to change too much in 20 overs, though.

Read our guide on toss predictions to learn how we analyze and come up with our tips.

Pitch and Conditions

We can be reasonably sure that there is going to be no rain in Abu Dhabi in the middle of September. The pitch at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium is going to be flat, on the slower side, and without much bounce to offer. A typical subcontinental pitch that CSK will not mind at all.

We have seen scores of around 150-160 be par in other T20 tournaments played here in the past.

MI vs CSK Betting Tips

We are going to back the defending champions to win their opening match of IPL 2020. That is not something they have done often in the past but on this occasion, their team seems to be much stronger than what CSK is bringing to the table. A better batting lineup, a younger set of players, and immensely more power in its setup gives Mumbai Indians the advantage.

Bet on Mumbai Indians to win.

Watson is a notoriously slow starter and one that take some time getting into the tournament. He is a top-order batsman with a lot of power and so there is some obvious risk involved but we think this could be a smart bet to make.

This is just the first match and we don't quite know the form of the individual players. This is why we would not advise you to go very big on this bet, however, it is still worth a look. 5x returns for the best spinner in the Mumbai Indians side on a surface that will take spin? Yes please!
