About The Match
The Mumbai Indians have now won their last three matches after starting the tournament with a loss. They will be facing up against the Gujarat Lions who also registered a win, their first in this tournament, in their last match.
This match promises to be a shootout between two batting heavy sides on what is regarded as one of the best batting wickets in the country.
7/4. This is the score that Mumbai recovered from against Bangalore thanks to a brilliant inning from Pollard. They would not want to be in such a situation too often though and be hoping that their top order starts to click sooner rather than later.
Jos Buttler has been disappointing at the top of the order, Parthiv Patel been unable to convert starts into anything significant and Rohit Sharma has only made 9 runs in 4 matches so far. Things could have been very different had it not been for the heroics of Nitish Rana and the Pandya brothers.
We think that it is only a matter of time before Rohit Sharma starts to come good though and one of the weakest bowling attacks in the IPL could just be what he needs to kickstart this IPL. The positive thing for Mumbai is that they have three wins without even needing their top players.
If the top order gets going then we can see Hardik Pandya possibly moving up the order in order to make the most of his striking ability. He is yet to be dismissed in this tournament and has hit 7 sixes off the 33 balls he has faced in total.
The bowling for Mumbai looks in much better shape with Harbhajan and Krunal Pandya being miserly with the spin, while Malinga, Bumrah, and McCleneghan are all deadly at the death overs. The burly New Zealander also hit his straps in the last match with 2 for 20 off 4 overs and can expect to get an extended run in the league.
Finally, the Gujarat Lions changed their team composition and brought in some bowling reinforcements. Not all the problems have been solved, though, Andrew Tye had an immediate impact with 5 wickets for 17 runs, including a hat-trick.
The Lions are still struggling to find 4 other good bowlers to fit in their team as no one else has been able to take more than 2 wickets in the three matches played so far. Praveen Kumar particularly is looking like batting fodder on the flat Rajkot wicket. The return of Ravindra Jadeja should help things somewhat but he is not the most successful of T20 bowlers.
We think that Gujarat will not tinker with a winning combination though and give this group another go in Mumbai.
If Gujarat is struggling to put together 5 decent bowlers, it has quite the opposite problem in the batting department. A lineup of Dwayne Smith, Brendon McCullum, Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik, Aaron Finch and Ravindra Jadeja is intimidating and capable of destroying any bowling attack that comes in its way.
We think that Smith is once again looking very dangerous and how he tackles the spinners that Mumbai will throw at him upfront could determine the outcome of this game. Dinesh Karthik would also have some excellent memories of the Wankhede seeing as it was with the Mumbai Indians he finally realized his batting potential.
Head To Head
The Gujarat Lions have been around in the IPL for only 1 year and so they have played the Mumbai Indians only twice. They won both those encounters last year and thus, hold an unbeaten record against the Mumbai Indians.
We think that Gujarat Lions have the stronger batting lineup but Mumbai definitely has the better bowling attack. A flat pitch idea for batting could bring this match down to a slugfest which the Lions should be able to win.
Gujarat Lions To Win.
