Lord’s London was the home to the most exciting ODI match in history as the World Cup final left everyone watching gasping for breath. Now, just a few days later, the Vitality T20 Blast 2019 is about to get underway with its first match being played at the same venue.
Middlesex will be taking on the Essex Eagles in a very interesting match. Both teams had a forgettable 2018 season of the T20 Blast and have added some exciting players to their squads ahead of this season. Middlesex, in particular, is going to be attracting a lot of attention with AB de Villiers on their roster.
The pitch at Lord’s has slowed up considerably and the groundsman had to leave a lot of grass on it to prevent it from becoming an absolute mud pit. This could mean a lower scoring T20 Blast match than fans are used to.
The team which adapts to the conditions quickest is going to come out tops.
Middlesex vs Essex Vitality T20 Blast 2019 is going to be played at Lord’s London on the 18th of July 2019.
Finishing dead last in the South Group in 2018 and losing more matches than any other side in the entire competition would have been humbling for Middlesex. They were one of the teams expected to fight for a playoff spot but they never got going.
The addition of AB de Villiers to their side is a huge plus and something that can turn the fortunes of the entire team around. It should be noted that Ab de Villiers has not really set the T20 leagues on fire after his international retirement but to count out a player like him against some of the county attacks he is going to be facing is just insane.
On paper, there is a lot of batting strength in Middlesex to call upon. They have Dawid Malan, Paul Stirling, Max Holden, and Eoin Morgan (who is unlikely to join the side for the first match) in the side as well.
The trick is going to be to get off to a good start because run-scoring might become difficult as the game progresses.
The bowling will be led by Mujeeb ur Rahman, Steve Finn and Nathan Sowter. There is enough in this Middlesex side to allow them to start their T20 Blast 2019 with a win and set aside the memories of last year.
PR Stirling, Dawid Malan, Nick Gubbins, AB de Villiers, John Simpson, George Scott, Toby Roland-Jones, Thomas Helm, Nathan Sowter, ST Finn, Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
If Middlesex has one of the strongest batting sides on paper then Essex has one of the best bowling attacks. Essex also had a terrible 2018 and finished the T20 Blast with just two wins to their name. It appears they have put their faith in their bowling attack to make a difference in 2019.
Leading the attack will be Mohammad Amir. He found his rhythm in the World Cup and was a class above all other Pakistani bowlers. Amir is also going to to be able to utilize the Lord’s slope to his advantage and that makes him doubly dangerous.
With Peter Siddle, Adam Zampa, Jamie Porter, and Simon Harmer in the side, there are no easy overs to face for the opposition side. The problem is the batting.
Ravi Bopara has not been the batsman he once was for a long time and Varun Chopra has never quite convinced us in the shortest format of the game either. Ryan ten Doeschate has been relieved of his captaincy and he is close to the end of his career as well.
Cameron Delport is a good addition but he is going to have to do the bulk of the heavy lifting.
Varun Chopra, C Delport, Tom Westley, RN ten Doeschate, Dan Lawrence, RS Bopara, Adam Wheater, SR Harmer, Adam Zampa, Shane Snater, Matthew Quinn.
The team winning the toss is going to want to bat first. Batting is going to become more and more difficult as the match progresses so winning the toss is going to be a big advantage.

There is a little bit of rain around in London but the weather shod clear up by the time the match is scheduled to get underway. The pitch at Lord’s has been slow all summer and that is not going to change. The side batting first will have the best of the batting conditions although 40 overs is not too long a time for any drastic changes to start showing.
A score of about 160 might be very competitive on this surface.
There is no doubt in our mind that the side batting first is going to have a huge advantage in this match, irrespective of how much grass is left on the pitch. If we just look at the teams objectively then Middlesex definitely has the better team for a T20 contest.
It has the stronger batting lineup, more power in the middle, and some very canny T20 bowlers to call upon as well.
Bet on Middlesex to win.
