About the Match
Middlesex continues to be in the bottom of the table yet to have some positive result after 6 matches and now faces the superior Somerset who are also not that well off, with just 6 points from 6 matches. While Middlesex last played against Kent about 2 weeks ago, and lost by 16 runs chasing a formidable total of 208, Somerset won against Sussex by a comfortable margin of 34 runs on 15th June defending a manageable total of 163 for 4, because of a superior bowling performance. Will the Middlesex team be able to repeat the same purposeful feat against Somerset and win the match? It will be an interesting contest and surely both teams will come out all guns blazing here.
They are languishing without any wins in spite of the heroic efforts against Kent on 6th June in which chasing a target of 208, the team collapsed at one end as Christian made a blistering 129 off just 57 balls with 12 fours and 10 sixes taking the side almost to the post but failing in the end with 2 balls yet to be bowled. The effort should give them some solace and the all-round performance of Christian, who bowled 3 quality overs to dismiss 2 batsmen of Kent before making the valiant centurion effort from one end, should act as a model for the rest of the team. Patel being the only other successful bowler, they could not stop Kent from amassing the huge total. If Middlesex can give similar performance, with other batsmen and bowlers raising their level of performance, they can make a match of it against the Somerset team which could change their fortunes dramatically.
Somerset are not playing to their full potential, with the middle order delivering mediocre performance, leading to the result that the team is not very well placed in the points table even after 6 matches. Janes and Kieswetter opened the innings well with an opening partnership of 58, after being asked to bat by Sussex and thus laid a good foundation for others to crack. Kieswetter and Petersen added 48 valuable runs for the 3rd wicket, and the team took the total to 163 for 4. In defending the total, Nannes bowled superbly to account for 5 Sussex batsmen, with Overton, Meschede, Thomas and Waller taking one each to thwart any chances of the Sussex challenge with 7 ball to spare. Trego needs to work hard to be among the wickets though he is doing well with the bat contributing consistently to the cause of the team. Somerset needs improved performance by the rest of the team to produce successful results in the rest of the competition; Middlesex can surprise them, if they demonstrate their willingness to succeed, with a superior performance as done against Kent, which the Somerset team needs to take care of.
Though Somerset will come up with a tough fight,we feel that a motivated Middlesex is expected to win the contest in the end.
