The Melbourne Renegades have climbed to the second place on the BBL League table after a thumping win against the Sydney Sixers. They will be taking on their cross-town rivals, the Melbourne Stars in this Big Bash League match.
The Melbourne Stars won the first match played between these two teams in BBL 08 with ease. After an excellent start to their Big Bash campaign, though, the Melbourne Stars have slipped to the bottom of the BBL standings.
A big question is going to be over the availability of the Australian national players for this match. Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, and Aaron Finch are all going to playing the final ODI against India just a day prior to this match.
Whether they are able to make themselves available for the BBL match in less than 24 hours is going to be interesting to see. Currently, the final squads have not been announced but we don’t think these players are going to take part.
The Melbourne Renegades took advantage of a sluggish wicket at the SCG against the Sydney Sixers and spun them out for next to nothing. Their own batsmen then chased down that total with plenty of overs to spare.
That match brought into focus the slow pitches that have been a feature of this BBL. Too many matches are being played on wickets where run scoring has been difficult and this has affected the quality of the game.
Aaron Finch is unlikely to be back at the top for Melbourne Renegades in this match and there is a question mark about the availability of Marcus Harris as well. He was on air in the last game when he said there was a chance he could play but it was not certain yet.
Thankfully for the Melbourne Renegades, Tom Cooper scored runs and looked close to his best. As one of the integral players at the top of the order, Tom Cooper returning to form is very good news for the Renegades.
Sam Harper got runs in the last game, Cameron White scored 16 off just six deliveries and Mohammad Nabi hit a six off his first delivery. It was clear that the Melbourne Renegades were trying to improve their net run rate and that is excellent game awareness shown by them.
With Mackenzie Harvey and Daniel Christian also in the order, suddenly the Melbourne Renegades are not looking too bad a batting side.
No bowler has taken as many wickets in the powerplay as Kane Richardson in this edition of the Big Bash League. He leads a good bowling attack with players like Jake Wildermuth, Mohammad Nabi, Dan Christian, Cameron Boyce, and Harry Gurney.
The Melbourne Renegades are finding their team balance right at an important stage in BBL 08.
Marcus Harris, Aaron Finch, Sam Harper, TLW Cooper, CL White, Mohammad Nabi, DT Christian, JD Wildermuth, Cameron Boyce, KW Richardson, Harry Gurney.
The Melbourne Stars have been left handicapped by the absence of Zampa, Maxwell, and Stoinis from their playing eleven. The Melbourne Stars have not been able to win a single match without their best three players and we don’t think that is likely to happen in this match as well.
If the Australian international players are not available to play for the Melbourne Stars in this match then just bet on the Melbourne Renegades.
The Melbourne Stars have struggled in every aspect of the game in their last few matches. The batting has not been able to come to the grips with the loss of their best players. Ben Dunk, Evan Gulbis, Nick Larkin, and Nic Maddinson have been woeful.
Seb Gotch played a few big shots in the previous match but even that looked fraught with danger.
There simply is not enough batting talent in the side for the Melbourne Stars to compete. Ben Dun is the only player that we would advise taking a punt on to be the top-scorer but only if you are getting excellent odds on him.
We had expected the Melbourne Stars bowling to hold up a bit better but that has not been the case either.
Dwayne Bravo, Liam Plunkett, Jackson Bird, Tom O’Connell, and Liam Bowe played the previous match for the Melbourne Stars but they were unable to have much of an effect. None of the fast bowlers have too much pace to trouble the batsmen and the spinners are not top-class either.
The Melbourne Stars will have to play much beyond expectations to have a chance of winning.
Ben Dunk, Marcus Stoinis, Peter Handscomb, Glenn Maxwell, Nic Maddinson, Dwayne Bravo, Evan Gulbis, LE Plunkett, Adam Zampa, JM Bird, Tom O'Connell.
The side winning the toss is likely to want to bat first

The BBL 08 match between the Melbourne Stars and the Melbourne Renegades is going to be played at the Docklands Stadium, Melbourne. The weather is expected to dry and sunny on match day.
The pitch at the Docklands Stadium has been a bit mixed. It has some bounce in it but almost always offers something to the spinners. The batsmen would like to see a little bit more pace in it but that may not happen.
The Melbourne Renegades are going to go into this match as firm favorites. They have been in winning form recently and are taking on a Melbourne Stars side that is severely underpowered. The Renegades have a better batting lineup, more quality in their bowling attack, and are also playing at home. All of this should add up to an easy win.
Back the Melbourne Renegades to win.
