Big Bash League is almost at the business end with only three matches each to go for all sides. The situation is still far from clear with all but one team still in content to qualify for the playoffs. The difference between the teams placed at the second and the seventh spot is just four points. Going forward each and every match is of high importance and mouth-watering contests are certainly on the cards.
Besides being a derby match, the upcoming match between Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades will have a huge role to play in determining which team progresses to the next round. The two teams are set to take center stage on 20th January at Docklands Stadium, Melbourne.
The Renegades, by far, have been the worst-performing team in this edition of Big Bash League. It is not only apparent by their position on the ladder but also by the difference between them and the next worst team on the ladder. It's surprising that despite having a terrific team on-paper, the Renegades have failed to put up even a fight. They still have three matches remaining but are already out of the race to the playoffs.
The major disappointment for the Renegades has been the performance of Aaron Finch. Finch has been too timid at the crease and has found scoring too tough at the top of the order. In addition to Finch not scoring, we haven't seen their other batsmen score consistently as well. In the last match as well, the Renegades were dismissed for a paltry total of 150 and that proved to be the deciding point in the game.
On paper, the Renegades always had a terrific team on paper, but lack of execution has clearly hurt them. Mohammad Nabi is no longer there and is absence has taken away the balance from the side. On the bowling front, they have decent strength, but lack of support from their batsmen hasn't allowed their bowlers enough cushion.
All in all, the Renegades need their batting to do well. If that happens, they certainly have a bowling unit that can put any opposition under pressure.
Aaron Finch, Zak Evans, Jake Fraser McGurk, Sam Harper, Mackenzie Harvey, Peter Hatzoglou, Josh Lalor, Shaun Marsh, Jack Prestwidge, SI Wasim, BJ Webster.
Melbourne Stars recently bounced back to the winning ways and will now want to consolidate their position in the top-four. With 23 points to their name, the Stars are currently placed at the fourth spot, and thanks to their recent win over Adelaide Strikers, the Stars have a decent net run-rate of 0.296. They are surrounded by teams who have equally good chances of progression. Considering that, the Stars will be under a tremendous amount of pressure to get a favorable result in this match.
The Stars had a terrific start to BBL this year but had an equally terrible middle-part. There was a time when they were dominating at the top and then suddenly dropped down to number seven. With fantastic performances in their last two matches, however, the Stars have finally moved back to the fourth spot. They'll be pretty happy to stay at this position, but winning two matches from their remaining three will be critical for that to happen.
Stars' bowlers have played a key role in scripting their comeback. In the last two matches, the Stars' bowlers have picked up twenty wickets and that has been the major reason for their recent wins. Besides, we have now seen the batsmen apart from Maxwell and Stoinis contribute as well. Andre Fletcher player a blinder against the Strikers and Nick Larkin played a measured knock against the Renegades to guide Stars home.
Even though Stoinis hasn't bowled much in the last two overs, his mere presence allows Maxwell an option in case one of the other bowlers does have an off day. With almost everyone contributing, the Stars all of a sudden appear to be having a terrific team. The over-reliance on Maxwell and Stoinis no longer seems to be there. If the other players continue to perform the way they have done in the recent matches, things are going to get difficult for the teams set to face Melbourne Stars.
Marcus Stoinis, ADS Fletcher, N Larkin, Glenn Maxwell, Nic Maddinson, Hilton Cartwright, Sebastian Gotch, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Adam Zampa, Liam Hatcher, Zahir Khan.
The Stars have done pretty well to bounce back to the winning ways and consequently back into the contention for the playoffs. Renegades, on the other hand, no longer can qualify for the playoffs but would want to end their campaign on a happy note. They now have nothing to lose and can be a dangerous team to face. They'll be desperate to take revenge for their recent defeat against the same team. While both sides have the exciting talent available at their disposal, Stars have been a better team this year and are our pick to win the upcoming match as well.
