The Melbourne Derby is always something to look forward to in any Australian competition and the WBBL is no different. The two teams have aspirations to make the playoffs and perhaps even challenge for the WBBL title this season. Starting well is going to be key for both teams.
The Melbourne Renegades have finished fourth for two consecutive WBBL seasons now. They have added some more heft to their team and will be hoping to make the step up.
The Melbourne Stars have been one of the worst teams in WBBL history. They have never finished about 5th and were dead last in the previous season. They have, however, committed some serious resources and brought in some big names to the Stars for WBBL 2020.
Melbourne Renegades vs Melbourne Stars WBBL 2020 is going to be played at the Hurstville Oval, Sydney on the 25th of October 2020.
The Melbourne grenades had a pretty strung bowling attack coming into this edition of the WBBL but needed to work on its batting.
The addition of Amy Satterthwaite and Lizelle Lee is a big boost in that department. Satterthwaite was one of the few Kiwi players that was able to put up a fight against the Aussies.
She has had success with the Melbourne Renegades in the past and will be happy to lead them once more.
Lizelle Lee is no stranger to the WBBL. She was an important member of the Melbourne Stars where she played some match winning innings. In between those though the consistency was just not there.
The Renegades will be hoping for a much better season from Lizelle Lee. She certainly has the potential to be the answer to their big hitting needs.
The one area in which the Melbourne Renegades are clearly stronger than the Stars is the bowling.
Molly Strano, Sophie Molineaux, and Georgia Wareham are all Aussie internationals players. They can make run scoring very difficult for the opposition, no matter what period they end up bowling at.
There are some injury concerns for the Melbourne Renegades but in general the team looks to be pretty balanced this year.
Lizelle Lee, Josie Dooley, Amy Satterthwaite, Erin Fazackerley, Courtney Webb, Sophie Molineux, Molly Strano, Georgia Wareham, Maitlan Brown, Courtney Neale, Carly Leeson.
The Melbourne Stars have made the big edition of Meg Lanning to their squad. That is a coup no matter how you look at it. Lanning is probably still the best batter in Australian women's cricket and her addition immediately makes the Stars a threat to contend with.
Lanning however is not enough alone and we have already seen that as she struggled to lift the Perth Scorchers on her own.
This is why the Stars have also added the dependable English duo of Katherine Brunt and Nate Sciver to their squad. Neither of the two players is very exciting when it comes to T20 cricket however they will add an element of consistency that the Melbourne Stars have been missing since a very long time.
The Melbourne Stars also have Elyse Villani and Annabel Sutherland to give their squad a decent amount of depth.
The big problem that we see for the Melbourne Stars is going to be finding the right balance in their playing 11 at the beginning of the WBBL.
Meg Lanning, Elyse Villani, Mignon du Preez, Natalie Sciver, Annabel Sutherland, Erin Osborne, Tess Flintoff, Nicole Faltum, Sophie Day, Holly Ferling, Rosemary Mair.
The team that wins the toss is probably going to want to bat first. there may not be too much of a difference in the playing surface for this match however the ball will tend to come onto the bat slower as the match progresses.

The conditions at this venue are always expected to be a little on the slower side. The spinners tend to dominate as the ball gets older however this is just the start of the tournament and so the batters can expect more favourable conditions than usual.
A score of around 140 should be power for the surface with anything more being tough to chase down.
This promises to be a close match as both the teams have some clear weaknesses and some impressive strengths. We think that the Melbourne Renegades should be able to win this match thanks to the superior strength of their bowling lineup. The only way that the Melbourne Stars could win is on the back of some brilliance from Meg Lanning.
Bet on the Melbourne Renegades to win.
