We are just approaching the business end of the tournament in the Big Bash League and things are getting exciting with every passing match. A much-needed win for Brisbane Heat reignited hopes and opened up the bottom of the points table once again. Melbourne Stars will now have to play catch-up to keep their chances to qualify alive. They have had a dismal run of late and things are not going to be easy for them. Up next in the tournament, Melbourne Stars are set to take on Adelaide Strikers on 15th January at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne.
With a loss in their recent match as well, the Stars are now in all sorts of troubles and would need to win most of their matches going forward. At one time, they were title favorites and are now struggling to even finish among the top-four sides. They met Adelaide Strikers just a couple of days ago and failed to do anything of substance. The Stars will be hoping that the change of venue from Adelaide Oval to Melbourne Cricket Ground brings about a change to their fortunes.
Even though the Stars are coming off several losses, they'd be fairly confident. One of the reasons for their confidence is that along with Marcus Stoinis, Nic Maddinson also played a useful knock. In addition to that, Stoinis is now fit to bowl again and could be used by Maxwell to shuffle his bowlers around in a better manner.
On paper, Melbourne Stars have a decent batting unit, which depends on a couple of players to do the job. Haris Rauf proved to be pretty expensive for the Stars in the last two matches but has a history of posting excellent performances at this venue. He could be a man to watch out for.
All in all, the Stars haven't really done justice to the on-paper strength they possess. They have firepower available all-around their lineup, but the execution hasn't been there. They'd need their experienced campaigners to put their foot forward in this must-win contest and if that happens, it wouldn't be surprising if Stars manage to bounce back to the winning ways.
Marcus Stoinis, ADS Fletcher, N Larkin, Glenn Maxwell, Nic Maddinson, Hilton Cartwright, Sebastian Gotch, Adam Zampa, Billy Stanlake, Haris Rauf, Zahir Khan.
Adelaide Strikers are currently placed at the fourth spot and will be enjoying their stay. They defeated Melbourne Stars recently and will be brimming with confidence coming tino this match. They have done pretty well in all three departments of the game and will be looking to build on it to deliver a final knock-out punch and strengthen their position at the top.
The biggest factor for Strikers in this upcoming match would be the absence of Rashid Khan. The leg-spinner was star-performer for the Strikers in the last match as he picked up important wickets, including that of Glenn Maxwell. Other than Khan's absence, the Strikers are likely to field the same team as they did in their last match.
On paper, the Strikers have a terrific team and everyone seems to be contributing well. They have experience at the top with Alex Carey around and a batting lineup that goes deep. Wes Agar and Daniel Worrall have done well so far and will need to step up to compensate for the absence of Khan. All in all, they have a decent side and could very well defeat Stars, even with the change of venue and personnel.
Philip Salt, Alex Carey, Matt Renshaw, JW Wells, Jake Weatherald, Ryan Gibson, Cameron Valente, Daniel Worrall, Danny Briggs, Wes Agar, Liam O'Connor.
The importance of this match for the Stars cannot be overstated. They do not have much time left with them and would need to register as many wins as possible in the coming matches. They are languishing at the second-last spot and would need some spark. The thing that works for them is that they showed glimpses of brilliance in the last match and are playing this match at a venue where they have a terrific record. In addition to that, they won't have to face Rashid Khan, who single-handedly destroyed them in the last fixture. Considering that and the form Maxwell and Stoinis have been in, betting on a Stars' win should be the way to go here.
