The Melbourne Stars and the Sydney Sixers have been the two best teams of BBL 09 and finished at the top of the table. Both the teams fully deserve the luxury of playing the BBL 09 Qualifier and having the chance to qualify straight for the BBL 09 Final.
The new format adopted by the Big Bash League from this season onward means that finishing at the top of the table gives the teams a massive advantage. The winner of the Qualifier is going to go straight to the final while the loser will get another chance to do so in the Challenger a few days from now.
This essentially means that both the teams can play freely without the fear of one bad match ending their BBL 09 title hopes.
Melbourne Stars vs Sydney Sixers BBL 09 Qualifier is going to be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne.
The Melbourne Stars played brilliantly for most of the group stage in BBL 09 but started to relax a little after locking up their place in the Qualifier. The Stars lost their last three games of the group stage including one against the Sydney Sixers.
There is going to be no complacency from the home team as it looks to maximize its advantage.
One of the big pluses for Melbourne Stars ahead of this game is the return of its highest wicket-taker of BBL 09. Haris Rauf has rejoined the squad and will be available for selection for the BBL 09 Qualifier. We are sure he will find a place in the playing eleven and join Nathan Coulter-Nile, Daniel Worrall, Adam Zampa, and Glenn Maxwell to form a very strong bowling attack.
Clint Hinchliffe is also likely to find a place in the side to offer another bowling option to Glen Maxwell.
The Melbourne Stars will know that the Sydney Sixers don’t have a very deep batting lineup and a couple of wickets could make life difficult for them.
That is certainly not the case with the Stars batting. Marcus Stoinis is in tremendous form and is the leading run-scorer of BBL 09 by a fair distance. He has the support of players like Peter Handscomb, Glenn Maxwell, Nick Larkin, Nic Maddinson, and Ben Dunk in the side as well.
There is no doubt in our mind that the Melbourne Stars are a better-balanced team than the Sydney Sixers. Playing at home is also an advantage since they are going to be well-supported in conditions that they know better than the Sixers.
Marcus Stoinis, Sebastian Gotch, N Larkin, Peter Handscomb, Glenn Maxwell, Nic Maddinson, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Clint Hinchliffe, Adam Zampa, Haris Rauf, D Worrall.
The Sydney Sixers have been very good in BBL 09 as well. Not only has the traditional strength of the Sydney Sixers, it’s bowling, been firing but there have been some pleasant surprises with the bat as well. For this crucial match and any others that follow, the Sydney Sixers have the services of Steve Smith at their disposal.
Steve Smith is regarded as the best test batsman in the world but he is no slouch when it comes to T20 cricket either. He unveiled a range of reverse-sweeps and ramps for the Sydney Sixers and is going to be a factor in the BBL 09 Qualifier for sure.
Daniel Hughes, Moises Henriques, Josh Philippe, Jordan Silk, and James Vince are the other batsmen in the squad for the Qualifier. This gives the Sydney Sixers a good batting lineup on paper and it will be hoping for some big performances from its senior players.
If Josh Philippe can give the Sixers a fast start then Vince, Henriques, and Silk can ensure a big finish at the end with Steve Smith shepherding the side in the middle.
Tom Curran is not going to be available for the Sydney Sixers for the remaining part of BBL 09 and that is a big loss for them. Steve O’Keefe, Josh Hazelwood, Ben Dwarshius, Nathan Lyon, and Jackson Bird are likely to be the bowling unit for the Sixers in this match.
Even without Tom Curran, the Sydney Sixers are a very strong bowling unit. Almost all the players are international cricketers and have experience of playing the big matches. It will be interesting to see if the Sydney Sixers include Lloyd Pope as a leg-spin matchup for Glenn Maxwell.
The Sydney Sixers are coming into this match on the back of three consecutive wins and will be confident of taking down the Melbourne Stars.
Josh Philippe, Daniel Hughes, J Vince, Steven Smith, Moises Henriques, Jordan Silk, B Dwarshuis, Sean Abbott, Nathan Michael Lyon, JR Hazlewood, Steve O'Keefe.
The team that wins the toss is going to want to bat first. Getting a score on the board is always preferable in big matches although it is not a big advantage at the MCG.

There are some clouds expected around Melbourne on match day but the weather forecast does not predict rain. We should be able to have a full uninterrupted match. The Melbourne Stars have lost just one match played at home in BBL 09, winning all the others that they played at the MCG.
The conditions have been batting friendly with a flat pitchy that is on the slower side. Both the teams are not going to mind similar conditions since their attacks are well-rounded enough to be able to adjust.
A score of about 170 seems to be a very good one batting first at the MCG.
Dream11 tips and Dream11 prediction for Melbourne Stars vs Sydney Sixers BBL 09 Qualifier
Current form is a big indicator for us and the Sydney Sixers score heavily in that area. The Melbourne Stars, though, have a better-balanced side that has been very difficult to beat at home. The presence of senior players like Steve Smith and Josh Hazelwood should give the Sydney Sixers the advantage in a high-pressure match.
Bet on the Sydney Sixers to win.
