Sydney Thunder started BBL 09 very well but has suffered a dip in form. Two losses in its last two matches have allowed the trailing teams to close the distance to it and are now threatening to overtake it. Its opponent in this match, the Melbourne Stars, is the team at the top of the BBL 09 league table.
Five wins from six matches have put the Melbourne Stars in an excellent position and they will not want to let up any time soon.
The Melbourne Stars won pretty comfortably against the Sydney Thunder the previous time they played against them in BBL 09 (although some late wickets made the scoreboard look a lot closer). That match was played at Sydney Thunder’s home ground. This time, it will be the Stars that are hosting Sydney Thunder at the MCG.
Melbourne Stars vs Sydney Thunder BBL 09 is going to be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne on the 8th of January 2020.
The Melbourne Stars absolutely demolished the Melbourne Renegades at the MCG in their previous match and will go into this contest against Sydney Thunder full of confidence. The previous match was also the last one that Dale Steyn is going to play for the Melbourne Stars as he returns to South Africa for other commitments.
Thankfully, Haris Rauf, Stayn’s replacement, has been absolutely on fire this season. He has picked up ten wickets in the twelve overs he has bowled this season for the Melbourne Stars. He also tops the entire league in terms of bowling economy and is currently giving away runs at just 5.92 an over.
Sandeep Lamichhane and Adam Zampa also figure in the top-10 most economical bowlers of BBL 09 so far and that has been a large part of the Stars success. They have some good fast-bowling options and some excellent spin bowlers in their side as well.
In fact, we just expect a straight swap between Dale Steyn and Haris Rauf as the only change for this match.
Marcus Stoinis has been embroiled in a controversy after using some homophobic slurs. He is currently the highest run-scorer of BBL 09 with 281 runs to his name and the Stars are very lucky he did not receive a playing ban as well.
Nick Larkin scored an impressive fifty just a couple of matches ago, Peter Handscomb has shown some good signs of form, and Glenn Maxwell is in terrific touch. Perhaps, Nic Maddinson is the only player in the side who is not pulling his own weight right now.

Sydney Thunder was absolutely blown away by a brutal assault from Tom Banton and Chris Lynn in the previous match. A rain-shortened match made life very difficult for Sydney Thunder that just did not have the same kind of firepower as Brisbane Heat.
We are sure that Sydney Thunder will be hoping for a more regulation match against the Melbourne Stars this time around.
The previous these two teams met, Usman Khawaja and Alex Hales were out within the first three overs of the match to the bowling of Glenn Maxwell. For a side that has a short batting lineup and depends so heavily on contributions from its top-3, there was no coming back from that start.
This is why we believe Sydney Thunder can take a bit more time and start conventionally.
The weakness in the Sydney Thunder’s batting is clear. Usman Khawaja, Alex Hales, and Callum Ferguson are followed by nothing much. Matthew Gilkes, Alex Ross, Chris Morris, and Daniel Sams are all struggling this season and have not contributed much.
It is difficult to see that turning around against a strong Melbourne Stars bowling attack.
Sydney Thunder’s own bowling is also quite good. The spinners will like the large boundaries of the MCG and the surface also should offer them some help. Arjun Nair and Chris Green were the two spinners that played the previous match. Let us forget the fact that Nair went for five sixes in the only over he bowled and look at the previous matches where he was quite effective.
We actually think that Sydney Thunder might be tempted to bring back Jonathan Cook in the lineup as well.
Sydney Thunder has some good players that have been performing very well in BBL 09. Scratch a little deeper, though, and there is nothing much to follow in any department of the game.
AD Hales, Usman Khawaja, Callum Ferguson, M Gilkes, Alex Ross, Chris Morris, Daniel Sams, CP Tremain, Arjun Nair, Nathan McAndrew, Jonathan Cook.
The team that wins the toss is going to want to bat first

The weather forecast in Melbourne does not predict any significant chances of rain which is good news for the cricket but not so much for the region. Still, the show must go on, and we are sure that the two teams will provide a good spectacle.
The surface at the MCG is one of the slower ones in Australia and always offers some help to the spinners. The large boundaries also make sixes harder to come by than at some other venues. A total of about 150-160 is a very competitive one at the MCG, although not necessarily a winning one.

The Melbourne Stars definitely hold all the aces while heading into this match. They have the better batting lineup and a more varied bowling attack. Sydney Thunder’s best chance is to restrict the Melbourne Stars with its spin heavy attack and then back the top-order to get the job done with the bat.
Bet on the Melbourne Stars to win.
