MLSW vs HBHW Match Prediction - Nov 16, 2022

It’s an interesting schedule quirk that the Stars will take on the Hurricanes in back-to-back games, as these two squads will play on the 15th and then again on the 16th.

The Hurricanes are currently third on the ladder and are fighting for a good finals position. The Stars are sixth and are battling for…well, just to not be awful. There’s no way this team is reaching the post-season round and is now merely playing for pride, but that’s sometimes a powerful tool in sports.

MLSW vs HBHW Team Previews

Melbourne Stars Women

It’s been a bit of an odd season for the Stars, as they did have two no-result games due to bad weather, and their other matches have ended in a 3-5 record. The team did pick up a big win over the Renegades, but it was far too close for comfort and came from last-over heroics by Annabel Sutherland.

Allrounder Sutherland (248 total runs this season) was amazing when the Stars needed 23 runs from the final over, as she hit three massive sixes to help push her side forward to the victory. She ended the match with 62 runs from only 29 deliveries and was pretty useful with the ball as well, with 3/37 from four overs.

The Stars got pretty lucky here, as they very nearly lost to a terrible Renegades team, and if it wasn’t for Sutherland’s great efforts and a bit of help from Bess Heath (31 runs) and Sasha Moloney (4/15), then things could be very different.

Although it’s probably too late now, Melbourne really needs better help from Lauren Winfield-Hill, as her 148 runs this season are nowhere near enough from a star batter. She’s scored just 22 runs in her last three matches, but there is a big performance in her somewhere.

Hobart Hurricanes Women

There’s no doubt that the Hurricanes are a dark horse candidate for the title this season, as they’ve been performing steadily better at just the right time. Three straight wins don’t hurt at all, especially when two of those were big victories over the Heat and Strikers (we’re not bothering to mention the Renegades win).

Having such players like Molly Strano and Heather Graham has certainly catapulted Hobart to new, dizzying heights. We can’t wait to see what these women can do on the big stage in the finals.

Strano has been excellent with the ball, picking up 15 wickets this season and keeping a great Economy Rate of 5.13. She’s making life tough for opposing batters and getting results. Although her wickets have gone down somewhat, Strano does have decent help from spinner Maisy Gibson with 11 wickets.

Graham is the team’s top scorer with 206 runs, which isn’t actually that much, but then the Hurricanes are one of the lowest-scoring squads in the WBBL. She’s been sublime with the bat lately, but has had much assistance from Lizelle Lee, Elyse Villani, and Mignon du Preez (who went wild recently with 73 runs against the Heat).

MLSW vs HBHW Toss Prediction

The Hurricanes are 9-5 overall against the Stars, but Melbourne often plays better when batting second. Stars should look to bowl first if winning the toss.

Pitch and Conditions

The pitch here is said to be quite balanced, but the new-ball bowlers may have a slight advantage for movement at the start of the day.

MLSW vs HBHW Betting Tips

It certainly feels like the Hurricanes will be too strong in the first matchup between the two teams, but if you feel like taking a chance bet, then it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary to back the Stars on the 16th.

It’s possible the Hurricanes will be fatigued and less interested in the second matchup, therefore giving the Stars the chance they need to get the win over Hobart. Even if the Hurricanes are the favourite, the odds are worth it to bet on the Stars as they play hard and having Sutherland on the squad just means there’s always a chance for Melbourne.

Bet on the Stars to win.
