The Melbourne Renegades women and the Melbourne Stars women are about to play their return match of the WBBL. Their first game was an absolute thriller that went down to the last delivery of the match. Eventually, the Melbourne Renegades managed to win and register their third win of the WBBL season.
The Melbourne Stars had started their Women’s Big Bash League with so much promise but have steadily slipped down the WBBL league standings. Now, they are in fifth position with four wins from five matches.
A couple of wins could still put the Melbourne Stars in the reckoning for the playoffs but they need to do something immediately to arrest their dip in form.
The Melbourne Stars women started the tournament with a win against the Sydney Sixers women. It was perhaps their biggest victory in WBBL history and indicative of what is possible in this tournament. Individual brilliance from any one of the players can help a team win against any of the other sides.
For the Melbourne Stars, this individual brilliance is provided by Lizelle Lee on most occasions.
Her performances have helped them win some important matches but such over-reliance on one player is not a recipe for success. Thankfully for the Melbourne Stars, the Melbourne Renegades women are also not a very strong side.
This means that a combination of average performances is going to put them in a good position and one good inning could win them the game.
Lizelle Lee and her South African teammate, du Preez, are the obvious candidates to help the Melbourne Stars women win the match. Reakes, Osborne, and Elwiss are also good players but have not been able to stamp their authority on the WBBL just yet.
There is nothing special about the Melbourne Stars bowling, like most WBBL teams. Seven players bowled in the last match With Osborne, Sutherland, and Ferling being the most impressive of the lot.
Lizelle Lee, Angela Reakes, Mignon du Preez, Erin Osborne, Georgia Elwiss, Katie Mack, Annabel Sutherland, Nicola Hancock, Nicole Faltum, Alana King, Holly Ferling.
The Melbourne Renegades women managed to register an absolute thriller to win their last meeting against the Melbourne Stars. The Renegades lost 9 wickets during their chase of 131 and the highest score from their batting order was 37 by Satterthwaite.
The Melbourne Renegades are a pretty weak side and we don’t have much hope from them in this tournament. They do have some players which can help them win the odd match. They are not too far behind a side like the Melbourne Stars, though, and that is why this return match could be very exciting as well.
Wyatt and Molineux are the standout batters in the Melbourne Renegades lineup. They both got a start but were unable to convert that into a big one in the last match. Instead, it was Satterthwaite, Koski, and Webb that provided the runs that won the Melbourne Renegades the match.
If you compare the two teams playing this match head to head then the Melbourne Renegades are probably a bit behind the Melbourne Stars. Danny Wyatt does not have a natural temperament for T20 cricket and even though she has tried hard to improve her strike rate, it just does not feel natural.
The performance of the Melbourne Renegades middle order will give confidence to the side that they can win again in the return fixture. The Melbourne Stars are a side that is on the slide and the Melbourne Renegades women have an excellent chance of moving up further in the WBBL league table by winning this match.
Sophie Molineux, Danielle Wyatt, Jess Duffin, Amy Satterthwaite, Claire Koski, Courtney Webb, Emma Inglis, Maitlan Brown, Molly Strano, Georgia Wareham, Lea Tahuhu.
The side winning the toss is likely to want to bat first

The WBBL match between the Melbourne Stars women and the Melbourne Renegades women is going to be played at the MCG, Melbourne.
The weather forecast for the match is excellent and we don’t foresee any interruptions. The pitch at the MCG has been slow and difficult to score on this season. A low scoring thriller might be on the cards here.
The Melbourne Stars women have been struggling in the WBBl as have the Melbourne Renegades. Both sides are dependent on just a few individuals to win them the match. We think the Melbourne Renegades should be able to win the return fixture as well thanks to an in-form middle order.
Back the Melbourne Renegades women to win.
