The WBBL’s biggest challenge has always been to ensure that the country’s developing cricketing structure is not stretched too thin between eight teams as that would dilute the quality of the competition.
This year, it looks like the investment in grassroot women’s cricket is finally paying off.
After a few matches, there is not a single side that is undefeated. The difference between the side at the top of the table and the bottom of the table is just two points. Maybe things will change as the WBBL continues but as of now, every match is one where both teams are capable of winning and that is exciting.
The Melbourne Stars are going to be taking on the Perth Scorchers in this match as both teams attempt to iron out some of the inconsistencies that have shown up in their first few matches.
The Melbourne Stars have won two out of their three matches and have a pretty decent net run rate as well. The reason why the Stars have been doing well up until now is because Lizelle Lee, du Press, and Osborne have played significant innings in the WBBL already.
Lizelle Lee scored a brilliant hundred against the Sydney Sixers while the other two also scored 50 plus scores.
Du Preez and Lee have scored three sixes each, a decent achievement considering the lack of sixes in the women’s game overall. Most importantly, du Press has also managed to bat through the end of the inning when she has got set.
It is important for the senior players in the side to be able to set the tone because a lot of the younger players would be moving up a big step in this competition.
The Melbourne Stars have also benefitted from having a bowling attack which multiple players contributing to victories. Osborne, King, and Sutherland all have three wickets to their name while Hancock leads the pack with five wickets.
The ability of the bowling attack to bowl consistently and be able to keep the pressure on the opposition was a concern but it looks like the Melbourne Stars are not going to have a problem in that respect.
This season so far has been a huge step up for the Melbourne Stars based on their previous performances. The biggest hurdle we see for them is somehow finding a couple of other batters to step up in case du Press and Lee fail to fire.

The Perth Scorchers have had a disappointing start to their WBBL campaign. They were one of the sides that were expected to be difficult to beat because of the presence of multiple international players.
Things have not turned out as expected.
Lanning and Villani are the two biggest names in the Perth Scorchers lineup and both are integral members of the Australian side as well. Unfortunately for the Scorchers, Lanning has played just one match so far for the Scorchers and her participation in future WBBL is unclear.
The loss of Meg Lanning is a huge blow to the side because she is one player that can score runs consistently and at a fantastic strike rate.
This puts additional pressure on Villani to score runs. She has not done too badly with 135 runs to her name including one score of above 50 as well. Villani has been consistent but thrown away a couple of starts which will irritate her.
Batters like Jones, Ebsary, Piparo, and Bolton need to play a bigger role in the absence of Lanning and this is something which we believe they are capable of doing.
The bowling for the Perth Scorchers is going to be led by Graham, who has 5 wickets to her name, and Preschel. Bolton, King, Cross, and Brennan all have been regular in the bowling attack as well but neither of them has been able to play a consistent role in the WBBL so far.
The loss of their best batter and a bowling attack which has underwhelmed so far may make it look like the Perth Scorchers are ripe for the picking but we think this side has plenty of potential. The emergence of some young batters gives the side a much-needed boost and the absence of Lanning will give them the opportunity to grow.

This WBBL match between the Melbourne Stars and the Perth Scorchers is going to be played at Casey Fields No.4, Melbourne. The pitch at Melbourne is expected to be excellent for batting with the small boundaries helping matters further.
The weather forecast id a little mixed for match day. There is some rain around in Melbourne but the weather is expected to clear as the match arrives. We can hope for an uninterrupted match.
The Perth Scorchers may have started the WBBL a little slow but they are a fundamentally good side. The Scorchers are also going to be available at a good price which makes backing them all the more attractive. The Melbourne Stars have two wins in their three matches but that side looks prone to a collapse.
Back the Perth Scorchers to win.
