About the Match

The Perth Scorchers and the Melbourne Stars played out the first of their back to back matches in the WBBL with the honors going to the Scorchers. It was a relatively close match with the chase being completed in the 19th over but the Melbourne Stars seemed outclassed for the majority portion of it.

Now, with a turnaround of just about 24 hours, is there anything that the teams can do differently? The Melbourne Stars would be hoping to arrest its slide which has seen it lose two matches in a row while the Perth Scorchers would want to continue in the same vein as the last match.

Match Preview

Melbourne Stars Women

The Melbourne Stars were put into bat by the Perth Scorchers and they got off to a pretty rapid start. Reakes provided the initial momentum with a few big hits from Lizelle Lee as well. The powerplay saw the Melbourne Stars score around 45 runs but the loss of both the openers was a big blow.

WBBL teams do not have the same batting depth as their counterparts in the men and so it is common to see teams play around with the batting order to try and maximize their resources.

The Melbourne Stars decided to promote Mack and push down du Preez to number 5.

The tinkering around with the batting order did not help too much as the Melbourne Stars were unable to get any sort of momentum back into their batting performance. A score of 124 was barely par because the surface was quite good to bat on.

The Melbourne Stars required another stellar performance form the bowlers to help them maintain their impressive run in the women’s BBL so far.

As things turned out, the Melbourne Stars were unable to pick up wickets and the Scorchers paced their innings comfortably to win.

The Melbourne Stars are going to have to figure out a way to find some support for Lee and du Preez in this batting lineup. Currently, if the pair of them gets out there is no one to help guide the side to a competitive total.

The bowling does not have the teeth to win too many matches on its own and needs some scoreboard pressure to help gain an advantage.

Melbourne Stars Women Starting Lineup

Lizelle Lee, Angela Reakes, Katie Mack, Alana King, Erin Osborne, Mignon du Preez, Annabel Sutherland, Kristen Beams, Georgia Elwiss, Nicola Hancock, Holly Ferling.

Perth Scorchers Women

The Perth Scorchers seem to be warming up nicely into the competition. They began with two losses in a row but have no won their last two matches. The Perth Scorchers have a good batting unit in our opinion and are capable of continuing this early success throughout their WBBL campaign.

The senior batter of the side, Elyse Villani, once again top-scored with 52 runs to her name. She has been very consistent in the WBBL so far and will be the most important wicket for the Melbourne Stars in this match.

She spent a lot of time in the middle, though, and playing back to back matches can take a physical toll so that is something to consider.

With contributions in the tournament from Jones, Bolton, Graham, Ebsary, and Piparo already the Perth Scorchers are not dependent on just one or two players like the Melbourne Stars are for their runs.

This allows the side to be more consistent and the players to play with more freedom as well. If you are constantly worried about getting out then you are not going to be able to play with the same sort of aggression that can make a difference in T20 cricket.

The emergence of Piparo and Ebsary down the order is perhaps the biggest positive for the Perth Scorchers moving forward because it gives them batting depth that very few WBBL teams have.

The bowling is led by Jensen, Pechel, and Graham all of whom had a good outing and were in the wickets. The Perth Scorchers do not have an exception bowling unit and that opens up the door for a team like Melbourne Stars to take advantage.

The task for the Scorchers bowling unit is clear. Get Lee and du Preez early to all but win the match.

Perth Scorchers Women Starting Lineup

Amy Ellen Jones, Elyse Villani, Nicole Bolton, Heather Graham, Lauren Ebsary, Chloe Piparo, Kate Cross, Hayley Jensen, Hayleigh Brennan, Taneale Peschel, Emma King.
