MLSW vs SYTW Match Prediction - Oct 31, 2022

The last-placed Stars are not having the best WBBL season ever, but they’ve got to buckle up and take on the Thunder. In a strange schedule quirk, the Stars’ last match was also against the Thunder, but unfortunately it was abandoned due to rain.

The Thunder had a pretty close loss to the Heat despite a great batting performance from Phoebe Litchfield, who scored 50 runs from 38 deliveries (9 fours).

MLSW vs SYTW Team Previews

Melbourne Stars Women

The Stars have got to deal with the Renegades first, and it won’t get easier with the Thunder after that.

There’s no doubt that Lauren Winfield-Hill had a good start to the season, but her batting has been iffy since her 74 runs in the opening match. She’s still got the potential for big scores, but we hope it’s not sunshine one minute and raining the next.

There’s a lot to like about batter Annabel Sutherland, as she’s put numbers like 45 and 31 in the current WBBL season. If she can do this consistently, then there’s a chance for the Stars to rise. Sutherland is a sneakily good bowler and quickly becoming one of the best allrounders in the league.

We want to see much better batting from Alice Capsey and Jemimah Rodrigues, who have both failed to ignite the middle order yet. Kim Garth is clearly the team’s best bowler and has 4/53 in her last three matches, so if she and Sutherland can elevate their game, then the Stars won’t have to be bad all season.

Sydney Thunder Women

Although the Thunder are sixth on the WBBL table with only one win, the team has still shown fight and courage in recent games.

Plus, Phoebe Litchfield is second in the league for total runs scored with 169. There’s no doubt that any Thunder potential win will rest on the shoulders of opening Litchfield. At only 19 years of age, she’s an absolute star talent with a skyward trajectory. Litchfield has scored half centuries in her last two matches, but it’s a shame she doesn’t have much help from other batters.

Tammy Beaumont did score 77* once, but that was quite the outlier, as her other matches make up only 10 runs. Captain Rachael Haynes and Amy Jones are somewhat reliable, but also have very erratic scores. However, these two are still the best batters behind Litchfield.

For the bowlers, we like the performances from Lauren Smith, who has 6/30 in her last two matches. She’s a crafty spinner who needs to get into the habit of picking up at least two wickets per game.

Fast bowler Lea Tahuhu is proving to be quite the asset, too, as she’s earned herself 4/61 in her last two matches. She’ll have to keep her Economy Rate lower, though.

MLSW vs SYTW Toss Prediction

The Thunder prefer to bat second and are 5-1 against the Stars when this happens, so expect them to bowl first of winning the toss.

Pitch and Conditions

It’s a pretty good pitch that never sees loads of bounce, so batters will have a great time here and we’ll see totals close to 160-170.

MLSW vs SYTW Betting Tips

The Thunder still have a better all-round team with Phoebe Litchfield performing well with the bat and Lauren Smith impressing everyone with her fantastic bowling stats.

The Stars are getting somewhat better, but they will be outclassed by the Thunder and just won’t have the squad to defeat anyone better just yet. Plus, the Thunder are 9-4 against the Stars.

Bet on the Thunder to win.
