Tuesday turned out to be a rather strange day in the ongoing edition of the Pakistan Super League. We saw two low-scoring games, one of which produced unexpected results. Quetta Gladiators managed to sneak in with a win in their eighth game, thereby keeping their tournament alive, albeit still by a whisker.
They will be taking on Multan Sultans in the upcoming match, which will likely govern the occupant of the fifth spot on the points table. The winner here will rise up the ladder whereas the losing team will find it difficult to progress. With so much at stake, both sides are expected to come in all guns blazing in this high-pressure encounter.
Multan Sultans did not get off to a great start, but they have done exceedingly well in this second leg of the competition. They are coming off a massive win over Peshawar Zalmi that not just bolstered their position, but also bolstered their net run rate. At the moment, they are placed at the fifth spot with a net run-rate of 0.153, but a win here will very well take them to the fourth spot.
Sultans posted a terrific win over Peshawar Zalmi in their last match with Shahnawaz Dhani posting a match-winning performance. He picked up four wickets for 31 runs and helped Sultans keep Zalmi to a total of 166. In response, the Sultans chased down the total with eight wickets in hand and over three overs to spare. Mohammad Rizwan and Sohaib Maqsood scored imposing fifties.
On paper, the Sultans have a terrific side that consists of stalwarts like Mohammad Rizwan, Imran Tahir, Rilee Rossouw, Shimron Hetmyer, and Sohail Tanvir. They have a side loaded with experience and capability and should not be an easy side to get past.
Mohammad Rizwan, Shan Masood, Sohaib Maqsood, Rilee Rossouw, Johnson Charles, Khushdil Shah, Sohail Tanvir, Blessing Muzarabani, Shahnawaz Dhani, Imran Khan, Imran Tahir.
Down and out with their main players out injured, Quetta Gladiators surprised one and all by defeating Lahore Qalandars, who had been one of the best teams of the tournament up until that match. They still are, but Quetta Gladiators' win would certainly cast some doubts on that tag, though.
Currently, the Gladiators are placed at the bottom of the table with four points and a poor net run rate of -1.467. While a win here will push them to six points, but their net run rate will ensure that they stay at the bottom of the table. They did pretty well against the Qalandars and another similar performance should put them back in contention to qualify, albeit with an outside chance.
Against the Qalandars, the Gladiators were superb with the ball and surprisingly managed to defend in a tournament, in which defending hasn't been easy. Defending a total of 158, they kept Lahore Qalandars to just 140, dismissing them entirely in 18 overs. Usman Shinwari was brilliant right from the word go as he picked up 3 wickets for 32 runs without giving much away. However, their pick of the bowlers was Khurram Shahzad, who picked up three wickets for 14 runs.
All in all, bowlers chipping in for Gladiators when it mattered the most. In the absence of their stalwarts, they will need their batsmen to do well, and if they can do that, they should be in business.
Jake Weatherald, Usman Khan, C Delport, Sarfraz Ahmed, Azam Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Hassan Khan, Zahir Khan, Mohammad Hasnain, Khurram Shehzad, Usman Khan Shinwari.
Bost sides are coming off terrific wins in their last respective matches and will be brimming with confidence. However, the Sultans look a better balanced side on paper and are, therefore, our pick as winners for this upcoming contest.
