About the Match
This is the last league match for the teams and it carries all the importance it deserves as Mumbai Indians, who won their last match against Delhi leaving them with 12 points, fight against Rajasthan Royals, who have 14 points from 13 matches, for the fourth spot in the playoffs on 25th May at Mumbai. The home team won its previous match against Delhi Daredevils and is in a better frame of mind compared to the Royals, who had a tough match with the leaders Kings XI Punjab and lost it by 16 runs. Thus, if Mumbai Indians beat the Royals in this match, there will be a tie in points and the NRR will come into play. The contest brims with all the suspense of cricket and it’s amazing how the IPL fixtures are drawn, making even the last match of the league so important; the crowd will be on their feet in watching this match and surely it will be a nail-biting finish.
Mumbai Indians had a good start in their innings against Delhi after being asked to bat first, in the penultimate league match and by the 10th over they had crossed 100 and only one wicket had fallen, with good tactics of rotating the strike. However they were restricted by the Delhi bowlers though the top order batsmen played reasonably well; the middle and the lower order collapsed and wickets fell steadily and with the momentum gone, Mumbai Indians could not muster enough runs on the board, as they would have liked to put. With 173 on board they shuffled the bowlers and unsettled the batsmen, and with better fielding and good support to the battery of bowlers from the team members, they won the match to collect 12 points in total. The Royals will try to dominate the proceedings and contain the Mumbai Indians, who were the late starters in collecting the points but their road to recovery after returning to India must inspire them to carry their campaign forward.
The Royals have a stake in the match because, even if they have 14 points from 13 matches, and they are in the doorstep for qualifying to the next stage, they are still not in it as the matches involving Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad have a bearing on the 4th spot. Except for Watson and Binny all others played well and maintained partnerships to achieve the target. Faulkner did well with bat and ball and took the team to the total of 163. Had he been promoted up in the batting order, probably, they would have had an outside chance of winning the game. However, tight bowling and good support from the field ensured that the Kings XI maintained their superiority over the other teams. The Royals have done well to get here and they must put their best foot forward to finish the race to the playoffs on a winning note.
This is going to be the mother of all league games with lots at stake for both the teams. A rejuvenated Mumbai Indians fighting to make the grade to the last four and the Royals trying to block their streak of wins and thus making it to the playoffs; the game will go down to the wire, and it will be a 50-50 chance for both teams but we expect the Royals to emerge victorious in the end.
