About the Match
Setting up 364 runs batting first, Pakistan excelled with the bat and the bowlers demolished the Kiwis to win the 3rd ODI by a massive 147 runs and leading the series 2-1; they will now go up against each other for the 4th ODI at Abu Dhabi on 17th Dec. The Pakistani contingent once again showcased their talents to dominate New Zealand and will be eager to continue with their winning momentum whereas the Kiwis will have to step up and win this crucial match to keep their hopes alive.
Devcich couldn’t repeat his performance with the bat and succumbed early on in the chase with a duck; although Kane Williamson again played a captain’s knock by scoring 46 off 52, his lone efforts couldn’t take them to victory. Taylor, Latham and Ronchi contributed well but it wasn’t enough against a tough Pakistani attack; the bowlers had earlier given away too many runs, allowing the opponents to blast away sixes and fours at will to post a massive 364 runs. Though Henry and the others took regular wickets, they couldn’t stop the heroics of Ahmed Shehzad and Afridi; the need to strategize well going forward if they want to contain the Pakistani batting line-up. The team has match-winners in the likes of Ronchi, Taylor, Williamson and other youngsters but they need to stay focused on achieving the targets.
Ahmed Shehzad had a lot of ups and downs recently with his performance but his innings in the last match once again proved his capabilities as a strong opener for the team; he scored a brilliant 113 off 120 to set up a giant total for the team and with players like Afridi and Sohail down the line, Pakistan set up a massive 364-run target for the Kiwis. Hafeez, Younis Khan and Sarfraz Ahmed are in good nick with the bat but will need to be more focused and keep the scoreboard ticking; the bowlers were exceptional as seen in the combined effort by all-rounders Afridi and Sohail, who took 3 wickets each to restrict the Kiwis and help the team win the match convincingly. Mohammad Irfan took 2 wickets while Wahab Riaz and Shehzad did well to contain the middle order of the opponents. They have good variety in their bowling attack and the fact that the batsmen are peaking with their performance, is a definite advantage for them right now. They are pumped up with their recent performances and are quite excited in the run up to the all-important world-cup; overall, the team has gelled up pretty well and will definitely come out stronger to clinch the series here.
While Pakistan is looking strong and will come out all guns blazing on Wednesday, New Zealand will be eager to level up and keep the battle on for another day. Though the match will be a tough contest between both sides, we feel the Kiwis will put their best foot forward and fight back to emerge victorious.
