About the Match

After winning the ODI series 3-0, New Zealand is ready to host the 3-match T20 series against West Indies, with the 1st T20 scheduled for 29th December at Nelson. The Windies suffered defeat in the test series as well as the ODIs, and would try to redeem themselves with a better performance in the shortest format of the game. While the Kiwis are already having enough action on the domestic T20 circuit, the Windies too have many players who featured in the and other T20 leagues around the world. Both teams are equally matched to throw surprises to their opponents and overcome challenges on the field; it needs to be seen which team can emerge victorious on Friday.

New Zealand

With several players like Trent Boult and Kane Williamson being rested through the T20s against West Indies, ace pacer Tim Southee is set to lead the team for the 1st T20 match. The squad will feature uncapped Otago batsman Anaru Kitchen, who has been performing well in the domestic circuit, and the experienced batsman Martin Guptill, who will be making a comeback after injury. Ross Taylor who is in good form will be in the team for the 1st T20 match while others like Glenn Phillips and Seth Tom Bruce will also play against the Windies. The bowling team will have pacers Doug Bracewell, Seth Rance, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry and Southee himself while spinner Ish Sodhi, who has been selected over Todd Astle, and Mitchell Santner will bring variety to the attack. They have a strong bowling attack with a good mix of pacers and spinners; with Southee in the lead, they could strategize to outwit the struggling Windies batsmen without any mercy.

West Indies

The versatile all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite will lead the team against the Kiwis in the T20 series starting on Friday, and he has players like Andre Fletcher, Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Jason Mohammad, Chadwick Walton and all-rounder Rovman Powell. They haven’t done well in the series so far having lost the ODIs and the tests after a dismal batting show; the batsmen will be eager to put up a fight here. The bowling department has pacers Kesrick Williams, Jerome Taylor, Rovman Powell, Ronsford Beaton, Rayad Emrit and Brathwaite himself. The spin attack would be led by Samuel Badree with Ashley Nurse and part-timers like Jason Mohammad and Gayle also equipped to provide breakthroughs. Although their morale could be low after the humiliating defeats till now, the Windies could prove to be unstoppable mavericks in the T20 format if they pull up their socks and focus on building strong partnerships whether batting first or during chase.

Our Prediction

New Zealand is resting several key players in the batting unit, and they would depend on the youngsters to deliver good results here. While New Zealand have been a dominant force in the the series so far, Windies feature a star-studded batting line-up and we feel that the Windies are better placed to outwit the hosts and romp off to a consolation win on Friday
