The top-3 teams of the Super Smash have been established and the two playing this match are not a part of it. This means whatever the outcome of this match, it is not going to have a bearing on the Super Smash payoffs.
The Northern Knights are going to be taking on the Auckland Aces without anything to gain but these are two professional teams so neither of them is going to be taking it easy.
Northern Knights vs Auckland Aces Super Smash 2020-21 is going to be played at Seddon Park, Hamilton on the 29th of January 2021.
Three wins from eight matches just do not do justice to the kind of talent the Northern Knights have in their squad. They have some of the best T20 players in New Zealand like Tim Seifert, Kane Williamson, Colin de Grandhomme, Anton Devcich, Scott Kuggeleijn, Tim Southee, and Trent Boult.
Unfortunately for the Knights, most of the team was unavailable because of international commitments and now that the cavalry has finally arrived, there is no chance of making it to the playoffs.
Still, for this match, the Knights have a very strong batting lineup and a bowling attack that is going to be hard to face by any opposition. They also have Williamson leading them and that has to be seen as a big advantage.
Tim Seifert, Katene Clarke, KS Williamson, Colin de Grandhomme, Anton Devcich, Mitchell Santner, Scott Kuggeleijn, TG Southee, Anurag Verma, Ish Sodhi, Trent Boult.
The Auckland Aces won their first match of the tournament in their previous outing. Just one win from seven matches is a sorry result for a team with some very big names.
The likes of Martin Guptill, Glenn Phillips, and Will Somerville have been around for the majority of the Super Smash but have not been able to have a big impact. That is just not good enough from players with so much international experience and success to their name.
The Aces will be hoping for some magic from Guptill, Chapman, and Phillips once more with the bat. They will need to fire otherwise the Northern Knights are going to run over them.
Kyle Jamieson, Ross ter Braak, and Louis Delport will ead the bowling attack.
In terms of personnel, the Auckland Aces are a fair bit weaker than the Northern Knights.
Sean Solia, Martin Guptill, GD Phillips, Mark Chapman, Robert O'Donnell, Ben Horne, Kyle Jamieson, William Somerville, Danru Ferns, Louis Delport, Ross Ter Braak.
The team that wins the toss is going to want to bat first. The pitch is going to remain good for batting throughout the duration of the match and so we do not think that winning the toss is a massive advantage.

The conditions are expected to be firmly in favor of the batsmen. The pitch is going to be even-paced and the ball will come on to the bat nicely. The boundaries are pretty big, especially when you take some of the other New Zealand grounds in comparison, and so the spinners will have a role to play as well.
A score of around 170 should be seen as the bare minimum that teams will aim for batting first.
We have no hesitation in backing the Northern Knights in this contest. There is nothing to be gained from backing the underdog, in our opinion. The Knights have a stronger batting lineup and their bowling unit is far above anything that the Aces can put together.
Bet on the Northern Knights to win.
