NK vs OV Match Prediction - Jan 24, 2023

The Otago Volts will face the Northern Knights in the Ford Trophy as both teams look to book a spot in the finals. <br /> With both teams set to play 3 matches each in the group stage, they will need to win all those matches to stay in the race for the ultimate prize.

NK vs OV Team Previews

Northern Knights

The Knights have been a bit inconsistent with their performance this season, losing 2 of the 7 games scheduled so far. They have also been rather unlucky as 3 of their matches were washed out and as a result, they are 3rd on the table, struggling to bridge the 4-point deficit they have with 2nd placed Canterbury.

Batting has been one of the biggest strengths for the Knights this season. Henry Cooper scored a superb century against the Central Districts in the previous match and is now the leading run-getter in the squad. However, the century wasn’t nearly enough to post a winning target as they were defeated by 6 wickets.

Captain Jeet Raval and Tim Seifert have contributed well with the bat. Kristian Clarke and Neil Wagner have bowled pretty well this season, picking up 11 and 9 wickets respectively. However, they had an off day in the last match and that was one of the biggest reasons for the Knights’ defeat.

We expect the Knights to put the loss behind them and make a fresh effort in this game.

Otago Volts

Powered by an all-round performance by Michael Rippon, the Otago Volts registered their 3rd win of the season as they defeated Canterbury in their latest match. With that win, Otago has moved to the 4th place on the points table, trailing the Knights by a solitary point.

Despite falling cheaply in the last match, captain Hamish Rutherford remains the top-scorer for his team with an aggregate of 181 in 6 innings. However, the other batsmen, including Max Chu and Llew Johnson will need to step up if the Volts want to continue their winning run.

All-rounder Dean Foxcroft, who has had a sensational run in the Super Smash, has been a bit subdued in the 50-over format of late. However, it is just a matter of time before he gets going. Jacob Duffy is undoubtedly one of the best bowlers in the Volts line-up, however, with him departing to India for international duty, much of the wicket-taking responsibility will fall on the shoulders of Michael Rae and Rippon in this match.

Ben Lockrose and Jake Gibson have picked up 3 wickets each but have been quite expensive at times.

Pitch and Conditions

The pitch at Seddon Park is a balanced one, providing even contests between bat and ball. The average first innings score here is around 240. The bowlers tend to get some movement initially but the surface evens out as the game progresses.

The skies are expected to remain overcast with temperatures ranging from 20-24 degrees Celsius. However, there is little chance of rain.

NK vs OV Betting Tips

Both teams have been rather inconsistent in their performances this season. Given the current form of both teams, there is little separating the two and we can expect a close contest. However, we think that the Northern Knights hold a slight edge here due to a stronger batting line-up consisting of Jeet Raval, Tim Seifert, Henry Cooper, and Joe Carter.

Kristian Clarke is the leading wicket-taker for the Knights this season with 11 wickets from 5 matches. He has taken 2 4-wicket hauls and has a bowling strike rate of 23.00. Given the fact that the pitch in Hamilton is helpful to the seamers, we expect Clarke to be quite effective in this game, especially if the Knights bowl first.
