The game between the Northern Knights and the Wellington Firebirds is a very interesting one. The Knights have played one match and lost it while the Firebirds have won both their matches in Super Smash 2020-21 so far.
It is early days in the competition and so there is no need to panic just yet but we are sure that the Northern Knights would love to get some points on the board. The Firebirds, on the other hand, are going to be confident and will want to keep their winning momentum to establish a healthy lead over the others.
Northern Knights vs Wellington Firebirds Super Smash 2020-21 is going to be played at the Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui on the 1st of January 2021.
The Northern Knights were surprisingly poor in their opening match. They have some very good players in their team like Scott Kuggeleijn, Tim Seifert, Anton Devcich, Dean Brownlie, and Brett Randall. These are players that are considered among the best T20 players in New Zealand.
Their presence ensures that the Northern Knights have a very strong core to build on at all times.
Scott Kuggeleijn and Brett Randall will lead the bowling while Tim Seifert, Anton Devcich, and Dean Brownlie prop up the batting.
If some of the other domestic players can also get their act together then the Northern Knights are going to be a formidable opponent to any team in the Super Smash.
We are very keen to see what Seifert can do in this match and the tournament in general. He has elevated his game to be the first choice opening batsman for New Zealand and he could really make some of these domestic attacks pay.
Tim Seifert, Katene Clarke, Dean Brownlie, Anton Devcich, Henry Cooper, Brett Hampton, Scott Kuggeleijn, Zak Gibson, Joe Walker, Brett Randell, FL Walker.
The Wellington Firebirds have two wins to their name to start the Super Smash and that is fantastic. We are still not convinced about their team, though, and think there may be some cracks for the other teams to exploit.
Let us start with the batting. Devon Conway is the batsman to watch out for at the top and Jimmy Neesham brings the power in the middle. Around them, though, there are some faces that can be put under pressure.
Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, and Michael Bracewell are all very talented batsmen but we think they could struggle without Conway or Neesham to score the bulk of the runs.
Similarly, the bowling is perhaps a bit weak with the likes of Jimmy Neesham and Rachin Ravindra expected to bowl four overs in every match. Hamish Bennett, Logan van Beek, and Peter Younghusband are the others that round out the attack.
There is a lack of genuine pace, none of the bowlers (apart from Neesham) are playing international cricket, and we don’t see any T20 bowling expertise here either.
The Wellington Firebirds have had a lot of things go their way in the two matches that they have played but we should not think that they are anywhere close to being unbeatable.
Finn Allen, Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, James Neesham, Michael Bracewell, Jamie Gibson, Troy Johnson, Logan van Beek, PY Husband, Ben Sears, Hamish Bennett.
The team that wins the toss is going to want bat second. The Bay Oval will serve up an excellent batting surface although overcast conditions can cause the ball to swing sometimes.

There is a bit of rain predicted on match day and hopefully, it will not turn into anything more significant. The ball is going to come on nicely on to the bat but the boundaries are pretty big and will keep the spinners in play as well.
We have seen high-scoring matches at this venue already and this could be another one where 180-190 is par for the course.
We think the Northern Knights are the team to back in this contest. One bad performance does not make it a bad team and the presence of some genuine quality players makes up believe that they are going to put in a strong performance this time around. They have the depth in batting and the quality in bowling to win pretty easily.
Bet on the Northern Knights to win
