The Wellington Firebirds and the Northern Knights are going to be playing against each other for the second time back to back to kick off the New Year. The Northern Knights won the first of these matches, just its second overall in Super Smash 2019-20, and would love to make it a double.
The Wellington Firebirds have won four out of their six matches in the tournament so far and are on second place in the Super Smash league table. The loss against the Northern Knights went against the kind of form that the Wellington Firebirds have been in.
A win in this match will take Wellington to the top of the league table.
Wellington Firebirds vs Northern Knights Super Smash 2019-20 is going to be played at the Basin Reserve, Wellington on the 3rd of January 2020.
The Wellington Firebirds had an off-day with the bat in their previous match against the Northern Knights and would want to rectify that. Their most successful batsman in this edition of the Super Smash, Devin Conway, got off to a good start but could not convert it into a big one.
Conway has 264 runs from six innings which is 99 runs more than the next best batsman on the team. Jimmy Neesham with 167 and Michael Pollard with 166 follow him on the run-scorers list.
The Wellington Firebirds have been able to get enough runs on the board through a lot of small contributions. Conway and Pollard are the only two players to have passed fifty for them this season. That is something the likes of Jimmy Neesham, Rachin Ravindra, and Michael Bracewell would like to change.
Ollie Newton has been the standout bowler for the Firebirds so far with 12 wickets to his name. The next best is Hamish Benett with 6 wickets to his name and Jeetan Patel with five. Jeetan Patel, though, has an exceptional economy rate of 5.75 which helps every other bowler in the side.
The Wellington Firebirds have a decent attack and a couple of batsmen in good form. As the previous match has shown, however, they are still a very beatable team.
Tim Seifert, Anton Devcich, Dean Brownlie, Joe Carter, Brett Hampton, Daryl Mitchell, Daniel Flynn, Scott Kuggeleijn, IS Sodhi, Anurag Verma, Brett Randell.
The struggles of the Northern Districts can be understood by a quick look at their statistics for Super Smash 2019-20. Tim Siefert has 183 runs for the Knights, the highest, with only Daryl Mitchell scoring more than a hundred total runs from the team.
Anton Devcich was supposed to be the best T20 player for the Northern Knights, however, he has not been able to perform in this season at all. He has 88 runs from five innings with a highest score of 35. He has also managed just three wickets in the 19 overs he has bowled so far.
For a player that was supposed to be central to the team’s strategy, these returns are just not good enough.
Now, Anton Devcich, Dean Brownlie, Tim Siefert, and Daryl Mitchell all got some runs and helped the Northern Knights win the previous match. If Anton Devcich can find his best form then this lineup could start winning much more regularly.
Brett Hampton and Joe Carter are also decent batsmen giving the Northern Knights a decent bit o depth in the batting department as well.
Brett Randall and Anurag Verma are the current highest wicket-takers for the Northern Knights right now with eight wickets each. They also have Scott Kuggeleijn and Ish Sodhi to give themselves a good bowling attack.
Devon Conway, Michael Pollard, Rachin Ravindra, Michael Bracewell, James Neesham, Fraser Colson, Jamie Gibson, Malcolm Nofal, Logan van Beek, Ollie Newton, Hamish Bennett.
The team that wins the toss is going to want to bat first

The weather is expected to be very good for cricket in Wellington on match day. There have been two matches played at the Basin Reserve this season. In three out of the four innings, scores of over 180 have been reached with the highest being 221.
This shows just how good a batting surface we can expect for this match as well. Both teams have some good batting firepower in their squads and should be able to provide us with a high-scoring match. A total of about 175 seems to be par here although teams batting first will want a few more than that to be comfortable.

The Wellington Firebirds have won four out of their six matches in Super Smash 2019-20. They are also playing at home giving them a slight advantage. On paper, there is not too much separating the two teams. The Northern Knights also have a dangerous batting lineup and a good bowling attack. They also just beat the Wellington Firebirds with ease in the previous match.
We are going with the home team in this one and think that the recent result could be an aberration.
