Bangladesh is going to be playing against New Zealand starting with a three-match ODI series and then ending with a T20 series of three matches as well. White ball cricket is the focus as teams try and get important World Cup qualification points as well, as we build towards the T20 World Cup later this year.
New Zealand has been one of the most difficult places to tour in recent times and so Bangladesh is really up against it. There are some key players missing from both teams, though, and so there will be some areas that both teams need to adapt in.
New Zealand goes into the series as firm favorites but as we have seen multiple times in the past, Bangladesh is not a team that you want to ever underestimate.
New Zealand vs Bangladesh 1st ODI is going to be played at the University Oval, Dunedin on the 20th of March 2021.
New Zealand is going to be without Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor for this match and perhaps the entire ODI series. Mark Chapman has been added to the squad as cover and is likely to get a chance to play.
There is no shortage of batting talent in New Zealand, though, and they still have a very strong lineup.
Martin Guptill hit some form against the Australians and is going to be very keen to keep that going. The same is true for Devon Conway. His consistency in the shortest format of the game is a good indication of what he can do in the ODI format as well.
Conway is our pick to be the top-scorer for New Zealand in this series right now.
Henry Nicholls, Tom Latham, Will Young, and Mark Chapman are the other batsmen in the squad giving New Zealand plenty of high-quality options to choose from.
The real strength and versatility of this New Zealand team come from its al-rounders. James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, and Daryll Mitchell can all bat, hit sixes down the order, and bowl their quota of overs. It is a luxury that few teams have around the world.
The bowling lineup of Matt Henry, Trent Boult, Tim Southee, and Kyle Jamieson is world-class. New Zealand can rotate between these bowlers and never have to worry about a dip in quality.
This New Zealand squad is a formidable one even without a couple of its best batsmen.
Martin Guptill, Henry Nicholls, Devon Conway, Will Young, TWM Latham, James Neesham, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner, Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry, Trent Boult.
It always feels that Bangladesh cricket is moving one step forward and two steps back as every brief period of domination or competitiveness is followed by a period of terrible performances. Traditionally, New Zealand has not been a place where we have seen the best of New Zealand cricket.
In 13 ODI’s against New Zealand in New Zealand, Bangladesh has not won a single one. It has toured pretty often as well with tours in 2016 and 2019 most recently.
The problems have been there for everyone to see. Bangladesh’s batting is a shadow of what it is in home conditions and the bowling is just too weak to be able to win matches either. The excuse of lack of experience or exposure also does not cut it as there are several players in the Bangladesh side that have been around for over 7-8 years in international cricket now.
Led by Tamim Iqbal, Bangladesh’s batting has a familiar look to it. Liton Das, Tamim Iqbal, Mohammad Naim, Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mosaddek Hossain, and perhaps Mohammad Saifuddin are the likely players to find a place in the opening match.
That will leave place for Mahidy Hasan, and three fast-bowlers t complete the bowling attack. Mustafizur Rahman has seen a sharp dip in returns over the last few years and that has been a huge letdown for Bangladesh. Rubel Hossain, Takin Ahmed, and Al-Amin Hossain have all been around for a long time and never had the kind of success they would have liked.
To see all these names in the squad once more suggests that Bangladesh cricket just does not have the depth needed at the moment.
Expecting different results with the same players over and over again seems to be madness and that is why we do not harbor much hope for Bangladesh in this series.
Tamim Iqbal, Liton Das, Soumya Sarkar, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Mithun, Mahmudullah, Mehidy Hasan, Mahedi Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Mustafizur Rahman.
There have been ten ODI matches played at this venue with five of them being won by the team batting first and five by the team batting second. We think that the team that wins the toss is going to want to bat first but that should not be seen as much of an advantage.

The weather conditions in Dunedin are expected to be good for cricket. The pitch is always on the flatter side with a little bit of help for the bowlers early on. There is no too much bounce in the wicket and batsmen can really play their shots once they get set.
New Zealand has scored more than 330 two out of the last three times it has played at this venue. We expect this to be a high-scoring match where 300 should be the minimum that teams batting first aim for.
We have no hesitation in backing New Zealand to win this match. Their bowling attack has been one of the best in the world in recent years and is going to test the Bangladeshi batting. Also, the depth in their batting thanks to some terrific all-rounders is much greater than Bangladesh as well.
Bet on New Zealand to win.
This one is a bit low in terms of return but it is just so likely to happen that we cannot pass it up. New Zealand has some terrific strikers of the ball like Martin Guptill, Devon Conway, and Jimmy Neesham in its ranks. Any one of them or others in the New Zealand side could win you this bet. Bangladesh has traditionally been quite poor at hitting sixes and we don’t expect them to suddenly start doing so.
There have been four hundreds hit in the previous two matches played at this venue. It is a venue where high-scores are hit regularly and we think the batting talent on the two teams is good enough to add at least one century to the total scored here. We suggest you take a punt with this one as the returns are pretty decent.
