The first T20 at Eden Park turned out to be very high-scoring and it was India that came out victorious at the end of a hard-fought match. Both the teams batted well and there was not too much to choose between them. The toss certainly played a big factor as chasing is always a little easier at Eden Park than defending.
The bowling attacks of both the teams will want to make some adjustments and we may well see some changes to the playing eleven as well. Can New Zealand fight back against a motivated Indian team very keen to win everything in its way?
New Zealand vs India 2nd T20 is going to be played at Eden Park, Auckland on the 26th of January 2020.
New Zealand must have thought it had got a pretty good total on board when it ended up with 203 in the first T20. They ended up losing by six wickets and with an entire over to spare, something that is going to make them reassess things for sure.
There is no doubt in our mind that whichever team bats first in the second T20 is going to try and get close to 220 now that the batting strength of both teams has been made clear. New Zealand will be very happy that most of its major batsmen scored runs.
Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Kane Williamson, and Ross Taylor all got a lot of runs. Colin de Grandhomme was a bit unlucky to be out caught at short fine-leg but that is how the game goes. De Grandhomme has been sent up the order consistently and he is going to be one of the key players for New Zealand in trying to get those extra 20 runs in the middle.
It is difficult to see any major change in New Zealand’s batting lineup for the next match. They have the option of bringing in Daryl Mitchell for Ish Sodhi to add to their hitting power in the lower-order but that will take away their most successful wicket-taker from the previous match as well.
We don’t think New Zealand can afford to lose any more bowling potency than it already has. Blair Tickner was impressive in patches but not a single bowler was able to curb the scoring. Tim Southee, Hamish Bennett, and Mitchell Santner had very tough days and will need to make adjustments to their game immediately.
New Zealand was at the end of a brilliant batting display from India in the previous match but did not really play too badly itself.
Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, KS Williamson, Colin de Grandhomme, Ross Taylor, Tim Seifert, Mitchell Santner, Blair Tickner, TG Southee, IS Sodhi, Hamish Bennett.
India came into the first match barely two days after they had stepped off the plane and one of their fast-bowlers was not able to play because he was so jet-lagged! This Indian team does not make excuses and makes the best of what is offered to it as they showed on the park.
The Indian bowlers started with some poor lines to the opening batsmen and paid heavily. They came back strongly later in the inning, though, to at least shave off 20 runs from the eventual total. Jasprit Bumrah was brilliant at the end of the inning and showed his adaptability. Bumrah has not been at his best since returning to cricket but we think he may be about to get there very soon.
We expect Navdeep Saini to come into the side in place of Shardul Thakur for this match. Thakur was smashed around the park by the Kiwi batsmen and was not able to execute his death-bowling skills. Saini has shown the ability to generate pace close 150 km/h and bowl yorkers at will.
Mohammad Shami had a forgettable night as did Yuzvendra Chahal.
Chahal also was poor in the field, something that India cannot afford at all against New Zealand.
We don’t think India is going to play Kuldeep Yadav on this small ground but it is certainly an option worth looking at.
Shivam Dube proved his worth in the previous match and will keep his place which means that Rishab Pant and Sanju Samson will continue to wait for their turn on the bench.
Runs for Lokesh Rahul, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer bode very well for the future. Rohit Sharma, the most prolific six-hitter, in the world has not yet got going and imagining the carnage he can cause on these tiny grounds is something difficult to fathom!
India is a very strong side with a strong bench of players waiting to step-up if needed. Most importantly, India has committed to this new aggressive style of playing and it seems to be paying off.
Rohit Sharma, Lokesh Rahul, V Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, Manish Pandey, Ravindra Jadeja, SN Thakur, Mohammed Shami, YS Chahal, JJ Bumrah.
The team that wins the toss is going to want to field first. This should be seen as a big advantage as the team chasing has won the previous five completed matches at the venue.

The pitch at Eden Park was absolutely brilliant to bat on. The ball came on nicely and there was very little deviation from the surface. In fact, the spinners struggled to get anything from the surface and the margin of error was miniscule.
The weather is expected to remain very good for cricket and the same surface is going to be used for the second match. That could mean a little bit of more help for the spinners and slightly more of a challenge for the batsmen.
Overall, though, the conditions remain heavily loaded in favor of the batsmen and 200-201 will be the score that teams look to get at the minimum batting first.

India usually gets better as the series progresses and we think we can see an even more improved performance from India in this match. Not only will its batsmen have a better idea of what to expect from the New Zealand bowlers but its spinners will also enjoy the used surface more. The return of Navdeep Saini is going to make the Indian bowling attack stronger as well.
Things are not going to get any easier for New Zealand.
