NZ vs SL Match Prediction - Jun 01, 2019

New Zealand and Sri Lanka are two of the most successful teams in recent cricket world cup tournaments. They seem to lift their games for ICC events and end up being in contention for the title although they are not able to make that final leap.

Both New Zealand and Sri Lanka have been also-rans far too many times for their liking.

They come to the ICC World Cup 2019 with very different aspirations. New Zealand is currently 4th in the ODI rankings while Sri Lanka is down at 9th (below Bangladesh and West Indies). New Zealand has a very capable limited-overs team filled with players that play short format cricket around the world while Sri Lanka has one of the weakest squads at CWC 2019.

The conditions are not something that either side is going to be worried about but New Zealand’s home conditions are very similar to what you get in England and that could be another advantage for them.

New Zealand vs Sri Lanka ICC World Cup 2019 match is going to be played at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff on the 1st of June.

NZ vs SL Team Previews

New Zealand

Ask any cricket watcher or analyst about who the ‘dark horse’ is for the cricket world cup 2019 and there is a good chance New Zealand will be mentioned. The Kiwis are a very good ODI side that is capable of beating any other side on its day.

New Zealand was beaten 4-1 by India in New Zealand, however, they have done much better while playing in their own conditions before that series. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and West Indies were all beaten easily without losing a single match.

New Zealand even managed to win two matches against England but lost the series 3-2.

New Zealand has a very strong batting lineup, easily better than Sri Lanka’s. Players like Colin Munro, Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, Tom Latham, Colin de Grandhomme, and Jimmy Neesham are all very good ODI players.

New Zealand may opt to include Henry Nicholls at the top of the order in place of Colin Munro but that remains to be seen.

This is a top-7 where there is plenty of power, proven ability to score centuries, and most of the players are in good form. Ross Taylor is in the best ODI form of his life and will be looking to make a huge impact on the cricket world cup 2019 while Kane Williamson is always in the conversation as one of the best batsmen in the world.

The slot for the spinner will be a choice between Santner and Ish Sodhi. Wrist spinners may be the fashion but we expect Mitchell Santner to be picked ahead of Sodhi.

Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult, and Matt Henry are the three fast-bowlers we think will start for New Zealand with Tim Southee being a very useful reserve if needed.

This is a New Zealand squad that has all bases covered and is experienced enough to know what it takes to win on the big stage.

New Zealand Playing 11

Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, KS Williamson, TWM Latham, Ross Taylor, James Neesham, Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, TA Boult.

Sri Lanka

No other team has had a more difficult build-up to CWC 2019 than Sri Lanka. The side has changed captains, made wholesale changes to their lineup, lost tournaments, dropped in rankings, and then repeated the whole process once again.

As a result, it is Dimuth Karunaratne that is going to be leading the Sri Lankan team for the ICC World Cup 2019. He will have some new and inexperienced names to call upon mixed with some of the familiar names we have seen over the years.

The batting will be led by Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera, Angelo Matthews, and Lahiru Thirimanne. Avishka Fernando is one of the youngsters to find a place in the squad and he is rated quite highly by the Sri Lankans. He could get a game as well.

Thisara Perera is the powerful all-rounder in the lower middle order while Lasith Malinga, Suranga Lakmal, and Nuwan Pradeep will lead the bowling attack. There is a lot of experience in the bowling attack but we don’t think they are going to be too successful.

Lasith Malinga just does not seem to have the fitness to be able to play the entire World Cup 2019 and there is no express fast bowler in the side.

Jeevan Mendia and Milind Siriwardene are the spin options in the side and neither of them can be termed as world-class. Add to that the fielding. This Sri Lankan side is one of the worst in the field that we have seen although a couple of players like Kusal Mendia and Dimuth Karunaratne are exceptions to that.

On paper, this Sri Lanka side cannot be termed as weak like a team like Ireland or Scotland. It is, however, one of the weakest squad’s in this edition of the cricket world cup and most teams will be expected to beat it easily.

The best chance that Sri Lanka has to win is to hope that one or more of its batsmen have the tournament of their dreams. That is the only way the weaknesses in its fielding and bowling will be covered up.

Sri Lanka Playing 11

Dimuth Karunaratne, HDRL Thirimanne, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis , Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, Thisara Perera, BMAJ Mendis, Suranga Lakmal, Isuru Udana, Lasith Malinga.

NZ vs SL Toss Prediction

The team winning the toss is likely to want to bat second. Cloudy conditions and a small ground could all mean a big advantage for the team that chases in this match.

Read our guide on toss predictions to learn how we analyze and come up with our tips.

Pitch and Conditions

New Zealand vs Sri Lanka ICC World Cup 2019 match is going to be played at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. A cloudy day has been forecast for match day in Cardiff. That usually means some movement with the new ball and so winning the toss to make the most of the conditions will be critical.

The pitch at Sophia Gardens is good for batting and we think it should flatten out after the first few overs and favor the batsmen. The spinners find the going tough at the venue and that is something that could help New Zealand.

NZ vs SL Dream11 Prediction

Sophia Gardens, Cardiff saw India go past 350 with ease and we think another high scoring game is likely in this match. Our Dream 11 team for New Zealand vs Sri Lanka ICC World Cup 2019 is going to be focussed on in-form batsmen that have shown good form in the warm-ups. Unlike T20's, we don't need to concentrate on just the top-order batters either. Remember to follow us on twitter @cricketbettings. We will update the Dream11 picks for every World Cup 2019 match after the toss has taken place.

Wicketkeeper: The new rules allow much more flexibility while picking the team and we have taken advantage of that. We have picked Kusal Perera and Kusal Mendis in our Dream11 team. Mendis scored a 50 in the warm-ups and is the best batsman in the Sri Lankan lineup while Kusal Perera is an extremely dangerous top-order player that has improved his ODI consistency a lot in recent times.

Batsmen: We have picked Dimuth Karunaratne, Kane Williamson, Henry Nicholls, and Ross Taylor in our team for this match. Karunaratne is another good Sri Lankan batsman and since there are not too many of those we can be reasonably sure of covering our bases with this pick. The other three are New Zealanders and reflect the riches that the Kiwis have at their disposal. Kane Williamson was in sparkling touch in the warm-ups, Henry Nicholls looks likely to open the inning with Guptill, and Ross Taylor is in the form of his life in ODI cricket.

All-rounders: Both our all-rounders are medium-pace bowlers who can hit the ball a long way. Jimmy Neesham and Thisara Perera are the two players we like for this match. Their ability to hit sixes is going to make them crucial during the end-overs.

Bowlers: Suranga Lakmal is pretty good with the new ball while Trent Boult is an easy and obvious pick. Lockie Ferguson is an under-rated death bowler and we think he could pick some useful points in this match also.

Captain and Vice-Captain: We have picked Kane Williamson as the captain and Kusal Mendia as the vice-captain in this match.
