The cricketing rivalry between New Zealand and Australia is one of the oldest in world cricket and it is not just limited to men's cricket. The matches between the Women's teams of the two countries are intense more often than not and it wasn't any different in the recently concluded T20I of the ongoing series between the two sides.
With a win in the first match, Australian Women will be brimming with confidence and they are likely to come out in the next game with even more intensity. New Zealand, on the other hand, will be keen to register their first win of the series in the upcoming encounter. The next game is to be played at Seddon Park, Hamilton on 30th March 2021.
While New Zealand managed to put in an improved performance as compared to what they did against England, they were still far from their best. Most of their batsmen got starts but no one managed to convert it to a big knock and that is what kept New Zealand lagging.
New Zealand got off to a terrific start as all of their top four batsmen got into double digits. However, the fact that none of them could take the advantage of the stable base pushed New Zealand into a pit from which they could never recover. Amy Satterthwaite top-scored with 40 off 31 deliveries. With the ball, Jess Kerr was the pick of their bowlers as she returned with two wickets for 17 runs off her four. Their supporting bowlers were disappointing, which allowed Australia to get back into business despite being down and out at one stage.
On paper, New Zealand have a decent side, but lack of experience with the ball did clearly hurt them in the last match. They also have the advantage of playing at home and if they can utilize that, New Zealand should make things hard for the visitors in the upcoming contest.
Frances Mackay, Hayley Jensen, Amy Satterthwaite, Amelia Kerr, Katey Martin, Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Hannah Rowe, Thamsyn Newton, Jess Kerr, Rosemary Mair.
Australia is arguably the strongest and the most successful Women's cricket team in recent times. However, their win in the first match was far from imposing and they'd want to improve going forward in the series. As it has happened so often with them, they overcame the initial wobble to register a six-wicket win over the hosts. Make no mistake, though, Australia had to work a lot harder than what the numbers suggest.
Chasing a total of 131, the visitors were three down for 14 and were looking at a collapse before Ashleigh Gardner bailed them out to drive a successful run chase for them. Gardner combined with Elysse Perry as Australia eventually romped home with six wickets to spare. Earlier with the ball, the Australian bowlers were mighty effective as they never allowed the Kiwis to run away with the run rate.
On paper, Australia is as good a team as any in business. They have a spectacular team with excellent depth available in their batting. Their batting depth was on display in the previous match as Perry and Gardner got them home despite initial setbacks. They have a superb bowling unit with experience oozing right through. Beating them is going to take a massive effort from the hosts in the upcoming match as well.
Beth Mooney, Alyssa Healy, Meg Lanning, Rachael Haynes, Ashleigh Gardner, Ellyse Perry, Nicola Carey, Georgia Wareham, Jess Jonassen, Megan Schutt, Darcie Brown.
The first match concluded with an anticipated result, but New Zealand did perform better than what the figures suggest. They need to make a few minor adjustments and if they are able to do that, Australia should find things difficult. Having said that, Australia are a far better side between the two and should easily rack up another win to seal the series.
