The New Zealand women are one of the serious title-contenders for the T20 World Cup and they will want to begin their Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 campaign off in style when they take on Sri Lanka women.
Sri Lanka women are considered to be among the weaker teams. They have some exciting T20 players including a couple of senior ones that play in T20 leagues around the world. Could we have an upset on the cards or will the New Zealand women roll over Sri Lanka?
New Zealand Women vs Sri Lanka Women T20 World Cup 2020 is going to be played at the WACA, Perth on the 22nd of February 2020.
New Zealand women have been among the strongest teams in the relatively short history of women’s cricket. They have not had the kind of success they were expected to and this is why they have a lot to prove in this tournament.
Leading them is going to be Sophie Devine, considered by many as the best T20 player in the world at the moment. Sophie Devine has been in an incredible run of form over the last year or so. She has scored runs against all opponents and is perhaps one of the cleanest strikers of the cricket ball.
She is also a handful with the ball and could easily find a place in any team around the world as a specialist bowler too. The captain of the New Zealand women’s side has a lot of responsibility riding on her shoulders and she is aware of that.
It is not just about her, though. Suzie Bates, Maddy Green, Amelia Kerr, Rachel Priest, Lea Tahuhu, and Katey Martin are all superb T20 players. Most of the New Zealand players participate in the WBBL, the toughest T20 League in women’s cricket, and find success.
This means that the conditions in Australia are not foreign to them at all. They also have a lot more experience of playing high-class T20 cricket than Sri Lanka women do.
Sophie Devine, Rachel Priest, Suzie Bates, Maddy Green, Katie Perkins, Katey Martin, Amelia Kerr, Hayley Jensen, Leigh Kasperek, Lea Tahuhu, Jess Kerr.
There have been instances in the past when Sri Lanka women have managed to cause some memorable upsets or run down some of the bigger teams close. Unfortunately, those moments have been far and few in between.
The problem with Sri Lanka women’s cricket is that the depth of talent is just not there.
Chamari Athapaththu is a world-class batter capable of scoring very quickly at the top of the order. She just does not have the kind of support needed to be able to influence more results in her team’s favor. Though.
Harshitha Madavi, Hasini Perera, and Nilakshi de Silva are some of the other batters in the squad that will need to step up if Sri Lanka has to make a fist of this match.
The bowling is dominated by spinners, as is the case for a lot of the teams from the subcontinent. This is where the element of surprise could play in favor of the Sri Lankans. They have a number of players who can bowl spin and that is what the majority of overs will consist of.
If Sri Lanka is able to pick up some early wickets, including that of Devine and Bates, then the cat could be set among the pigeons.
Chamari Atapattu, Hasini Perera, Harshitha Madavi, Shashikala Siriwardene, Anushka Sanjeewani, Nilakshi de Silva, Ama Kanchana, Kavisha Dilhari, Sugandika Kumari, Udeshika Prabodhani, Achini Kulasuriya.

The weather in Perth is expected to be a bit cloudy on match day but the chances of any rain falling remain slim. The pitch at the WACA will have a fair amount of pace and bounce in it. In women’s cricket, this usually translates to a lot more runs being scored since the ball tends to fly off the bat.
The conditions are definitely in favor of the New Zealand women's cricket team.
