Otago Volts are going into this match with a draw in their last encounter against Wellington. The Wellington team batted first and scored 368 runs all out in their first inning. The Otago Volts' reply to this total was a game effort with 287 runs in their first inning. Wellington batted well in their second innings as well scoring 336 runs for the loss of 7 wickets when they decided to declare their innings to try and make inroads in the Otago batting line-up. They succeeded to an extent but Otago held on for a draw in an exciting game of cricket that could have swung both ways.

The best bowler in the inning for Otago Volts was Jacob Duffy who picked up 4 victims for 92 runs. He was well supported by the likes of Jarrod McKay and Michael Rippon who picked up a couple of wickets apiece. During the Otago first innings, the Wellington bowlers made quick inroads to pick up a couple of early wickets. However, the Otago skipper Hamish Rutherford and Glenn Phillips held their nerve to develop a partnership to get the Otago side out of troubled waters. Dale Phillips also scored 87 runs in the middle order to take the Volts' total to respectability.

During the Wellington second inning, the most successful bowler for Otago was Jarrod McKay. He picked up 3 wickets for 52 runs to stem the flow of runs somewhat. The Otago Volts' second inning again got off to a bad start with both the openers being dislodged in quick succession. But Dean Foxcroft was like a pillar of strength for the team hitting up 159 runs from 254 balls with 21 fours. He was playing so well that eventually, it was a runout that dislodged him from the crease. Glenn Phillips was also among the runs scoring 47 runs from just 28 balls with the help of 8 fours and a six.

Canterbury Kings

The Canterbury Kings on the other hand recorded a win against Northern Districts in their last match by a margin of 4 wickets. Batting first the Northern Districts team scored 273 runs for the loss of 9 wickets declared. The Canterbury Kings team scored 335 runs in their first inning all out. They were also successful in restricting the Northern Districts in their second innings to a score of 239 runs. This meant the Canterbury side had to chase a score of 178 runs in their 4th inning to win this game. They achieved the target with 4 wickets to spare and won the game.

The Canterbury fast bowling attack was right on the money in the Northern Districts' first innings picking up 3 out of their first 4 batters for naught. But Jeet Raval and Mitchell Santner held their nerve in the middle order to pull their side out of deep waters. The best bowler for Kings in the ND inning was Henry Shipley who collected 3 wickets for 44 runs. He was well-supported by his opening ball partner Fraser Sheat who took 2 wickets for 59 runs. All the other bowlers used by Canterbury picked up a wicket apiece.

Canterbury Kings made a decent start to their innings with several contributions coming along from the likes of Chad Bowes, Rhys Mariu, and later in the lower middle order by the likes of Henry Shipley, Ish Sodhi, and Fraser Sheat. Northern Districts made a much better start in their second innings with all their top 3 batters contributing to the total. However, Zakary Foulkes bowled well for the Kings picking up 4 scalps for 65 runs to restrict the opposition. Kings chased down the required runs with Rhys Mariu again scoring 78 runs with 10 fours to hold the inning together.
