PAK vs WI Match Prediction - Dec 16, 2021

Cricket in Pakistan took a hit when New Zealand and England both abruptly withdrew from the series that they were set to play against Pakistan right before the T20I World Cup. After a spectacular performance by Pakistan in the World Cup in UAE, Pakistan welcomed West Indies to host a long tour, which they have started off on a fantastic note.

With a win in the recently concluded second T20I of the series, Pakistan have the upper hand and will be looking to script a clean-sweep in this shortest format of the game. West Indies, on the other hand, will be looking to salvage some pride with a win in the only remaining T20I of the series.

The two sides are all set to meet in a couple of days' time on 16th December 2021 at the National Stadium, Karachi. Even though Pakistan have been a superior team by far, West Indies cannot be taken lightly with the firepower they have. This series could end on a terrific note and a cracker of a contest is certainly on the cards.

PAK vs WI Team Previews

Pakistan

Pakistan were dealt with a major setback when England and New Zealand both refused to tour them owing to security concerns. However, that arguably brought the team closer and motivated them to do well in the subsequent matches that played. This is evident by their performance in the World Cup as they stayed unbeaten until their semi-final meeting against Australia, which they lost by a pretty narrow margin.

Pakistan have always been a difficult side to contend with at home regardless of the format and it is proving to be nothing different in their ongoing series against West Indies. They started off their run with a fantastic 63-run win and then topped it off with a 9-run win in their most recent match.

Batting first in the second match, Pakistan managed to put a challenging total of 172 runs on the board after a not-so-good performance by their top-order, a total that just proved to be enough against an inexperienced Windies batting lineup. Although Pakistan kept losing wickets at regular intervals, their middle-order ensured that they kept chipping away at the run rate. A stupendous cameo by Shadab Khan of 28 from 12 balls ensured that they end up with the total they eventually did.

While their batsmen played their part, their win was set by their bowlers. All bowlers expect Shadab Khan picked up at least a couple of wickets each and that proved to be the deciding factor. Shadab Khan, as well, was brilliant with the ball even though he did not pick up any wickets. Shaheen Shah Afridi was the pick of their bowlers as he returned with the figures of 3 for 26 in his four overs.

On paper, there aren't a lot of changes to the side that Pakistan played in the World Cup. Even though Babar Azam hasn't been amongst the runs in the series, their opening pair looks as solid as a rock. Apart from the pair, the likes of Fakhar Zaman, Haider Ali, and Iftikhar Ahmed have done a decent job. Besides, they bat pretty deep with Shadab Khan available at number eight. On the bowling front as well, they have a wide array of options in Shadab Khan, Mohammad Wasim, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Nawaz, and Shaheen Shah Afridi.

All in all, Pakistan have an immaculately balanced side and the scoreline of 2-0 in their favor is not a surprise. They are playing at home and will be a confident unit given the results they have posted in their recent matches. Unless they get complacent or do something silly in this upcoming match, they should cruise to yet another win in this series.

Pakistan Playing 11

Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Fakhar Zaman, Haider Ali, Iftikhar Ahmed, Asif Ali, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Mohammad Hasnain, Shahnawaz Dhani.

West Indies

Not long ago, West Indies used to be a force to reckon with in this shortest format of the game. With many of their experienced players nearing retirement and their board experiencing internal off-field issues with players, West Indies are now left to be a shadow of the force they once were. Having said that, they still have a lot of talent available at their disposal, which if channelized right can prove to be very dangerous in this format of the game.

We have already seen some of the glimpses of brilliance from the West Indies' youngsters and they will be looking to step up their game after facing two back-to-back defeats. The bowlers have done a reasonably good job for the tourists up until now, but the batsmen have disappointed.

In the second match, a total of 172 was chase-able given the surface that was on offer, but irresponsible cricket from their batsmen saw their side lose by a minuscule margin of nine runs. Experience has been a major factor in their performances up until now as their only player with reasonable experience of playing cricket at the top level, Nicholas Pooran, has not scored a big one yet. The likes of Brandon King and Romario Shephard have impressed, but the contribution from them has been too little too less to take their side to a victory.

On paper, West Indies certainly lack experience, but they are certainly a side rich in talent. Nicholas Pooran can be a force once he gets going and is only one knock away from a match-winning innings. Other than him, as well, West Indies have some promising names available to bat. Their bowling arguably looks a lot stronger than their batting and the results have shown that as well. Having said that, experiencing or lack thereof is apparent there as well.

Overall, West Indies have a lot of open gaps that they would like to address in a couple of days they have before this final match of the series. As seen in the different leagues across the globe, their players have an immense amount of talent and can take the game away from any opponent in a matter of minutes. If they are able to hold their nerve in crunch situations and the team can contribute to its on-paper potential, West Indies will be a force to deal with in this upcoming match.

PAK vs WI Toss Prediction

In both the matches gone so far, the team winning the toss elected to field. While the result didn't go their way, the decision at the toss cannot be question. The presence of dew and the recent records in this format makes fielding first the more viable option. Given that both matches have been won by team batting first in the series, batting first is a tempting option. Having said that, winning the toss and bowling first is more practical due to the presence of dew and other factors. For those reasons, we expect the captain winning the toss to field first.

Pitch and Conditions

Even though it's been just a couple of matches in the series, the scores batting first read 200 and 172 in the first and second match respectively. No doubt that the surface has slowed down a bit, it is still likely to be an excellent wicket to bat on. A pleasant day with clear sky means that weather would be excellent to play cricket. As it is a day-night match, dew will be a factor. Spinners and seamers have both enjoyed their time here and we expect nothing different in this upcoming match as well. A total of 170 will be about par here and the team batting first will want to score at least 10 runs more than that.

PAK vs WI Betting Tips

Bilateral series may have lost their following in recent times, owing to multiple ICC tournaments being played of late, this series could not be any more significant for the hosts. This series marks the return of cricket to Pakistan and they would want to end this T20I series on a winning note. West Indies, on the other hand, would want to exhibit what their youngsters are capable of. This is definitely going to be an exciting contest with both sides likely to strive hard to emerge on top.

Comparing the two sides on the basis of recent performances and their respective on paper combinations, Pakistan seem ahead. Also, they have the home advantage at their disposal, which has already been a factor in this series. For that reason and the others stated above, betting on a Pakistan win should be the way to go here.

West Indies' batting has not fired up until now, but it is by no way incapable to score big runs. The likes of Brandon King and Nicholas Pooran are both capable enough to take on any bowling unit. Pakistan, on the other hand, have looked well settled with the bat. We expect both these sides to come good with the bat on a rather placid, resulting in a high-scoring game. Bet on match total to exceed 312.5.

Mohammad Rizwan has arguably looked the most complete batsman from Pakistan's camp and the numbers are there to show. He has looked in excellent touch in both the matches gone so far and has already smashed a fifty. The fact that he opens the batting allows him the best chance to play a big knock. Considering that and the form he is in, a bet on him to score a fifty here seems to be a pretty lucrative proposition.

With the remarkable recent period they have together had of late, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan are now the eighth most scoring opening pairs in World Cricket. We have still not seen their best in the tournament, but they continue to be the better opening pair between the two sides. Considering their recent record and the fact that West Indies' opening pair hasn't done too well either, betting on Pakistan to have the highest opening partnership makes complete sense.
