About the Match

A heartbreaking loss in the second T20 means that Sri Lanka will approach the last match of this tour with a genuine fear of being blanked out again and losing their 16th consecutive limited overs match. That’s a long time to have gone without winning a match and that can affect the morale of the side. Pakistan, on the other hand, will be on top of the world to be playing the final T20 in front of a home crowd at a time when they are among the best-limited overs teams in the world.

Match Preview

Pakistan

The occasion of a playing an international match in front of their home crowd has become so rare, and thus, so dear that the Pakistani players will need no extra motivation to win the last match of this series that they have already won. Their performance in the second match was poor and could have led to a shock loss had it not been for Shadab Khan’s heroics in the last over. This match should also serve as a wake-up call for Pakistan that its batting lineup is still fragile and needs tweaking. We can easily see Imam ul Haq making his T20 debut in place of the out of form Ahmed Shahzad. They remain too dependent on Babar Azam and Shoaib Malik and the opposition will always feel they are in with a chance if they can get these two out quickly. We think that Babar Azam is in line to score some runs in the last match on what should hopefully be a much better batting wicket than the one they encountered in Abu Dhabi. The one thing that Pakistani batsmen have to be careful about is not to get overboard and try too many things while playing in front of a home crowd. The current feeling in their camp would be of near invincibility and that can be very dangerous in cricket. While the Pakistani batting is strictly average, their bowling is definitely world class. Hasan Ali is the star of this bowling lineup and should enjoy bowling at the Gaddafi stadium with the crowd at his back. Shadab Khan, Faheem Ashraf, Shoaib Malik, and local favorite Usman Khan will pose a massive challenge to Sri Lanka and it is one that we frankly don’t think the visitors will have any answer to.

Sri Lanka

There was no way that Sri Lanka could have come closer to victory without actually winning and that will weigh down heavily on the team. Playing against Pakistan is a difficult proposition at any time but put them in their true home conditions and it is a completely different level of challenge. There were a lot of things that Sri Lanka did right in the second T20 and they will hope to repeat those. Gunathilaka played some attractive shots and was well supported for a while by Munaweera and Samarawickrama but his downfall highlighted the lack of depth in this Sri Lankan batting. From a promising 106 for 1, Sri Lanka collapsed to 119 for 9, as one bad shot followed the next. The skill level of this Sri Lankan team is just not good enough to be able to compete with Pakistan over an extended period of time and they have to hope for a brilliant individual performance to pull off an upset. The same glaring lack of quality is also visible in their bowling. Yes, they had Pakistan on the ropes in the second ODI after an inspiring spell from Thisara Perera but it is hard to find one other bowler that would make the playing eleven of any other test team in the world. Sri Lanka is playing this series with one arm tied behind its back after the board decided to field a half-strength team and that is visible in their results. It is commendable that what is basically a club team is able to provide some semblance of competition to Pakistan but to expect them to win matches with any certainty is foolishness.

Pitch and Conditions

The pitch at Lahore should be excellent for batting and remain that way for the duration of the forty overs. Teams may decide to bat second if they are wary of dew playing spoilsport. There is no chance of rain interrupting the match.
