About the Match
Pakistan finally got 2 points on the board by defeating Zimbabwe on Sunday; they are at the 6th position and will go up against UAE, who are at the bottom of the table in group B with zero points, on 4th March at the McLean stadium, Napier. Both teams have suffered humiliating defeats against their opponents and must win this game; Pakistan will hope to keep their quarter-final hopes alive with a win here while UAE will definitely fight hard before they crash out of the tournament.
Finally, Pakistan won a match here with a win against Zimbabwe by a narrow margin of 20 runs as they defended a low total of 235. Skipper Misbah-ul-Haq blasted 73 off 121 while a superb all-round performance by Wahab Riaz, who scored 54 off 46, ensured a 200-plus total. On the bowling front, they executed very well with Mohammad Irfan taking 4-30 and Wahab Riaz’s 4-45 wickets that helped them bowl out UAE and register their first win of the campaign. They lost to India by 76 runs and suffering a humiliating 150-run defeat to West Indies; this victory will surely boost their morale but they need to work hard on their batting performance. The team has many experienced and talented players like Misbah-ul-Haq, who scored 76 against India and 73 against Zimbabwe, Umar Akamal and Sohaib Maqsood registered fifty plus runs against West Indies while Wahab Riaz scored a half-century against Zimbabwe. The bowling department is also in good form with Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Irfan, Sohail Khan and Rahat Ali displaying a formidable attack; however, they should be cautious and use the talent at hand to win the upcoming match.
They were thrashed by India and dismissed only for 102 runs batting first, which is the lowest total at the World Cup so far; the opponents won easily by 9 wickets with 187 balls to spare. A spirited 35 from Shaiman Anwar spared UAE from real embarrassment as they crossed hundred; the fighting last-wicket stand between Shaiman Anwar and Manjula Guruge went in vain as the total was never going to be enough against the reigning champions. Mohammad Naveed and Manjula Guruge bowled reasonably well; Rohan Mustafa, with a spark of brilliance on the field took an impressive catch but it was always going to be a herculean task for UAE to make a match out of it. They have lost 3 consecutive matches in the tournament and are under lot of pressure, but the team has talented players, who can bounce back against Pakistan in the forthcoming match. One of their best performers is Shaiman Anwar and with 208 runs at an average of 69.33, Khurram Khan is also a key player to the team’s chances. Mohammad Taqir can be lethal with the ball but the others too need to shoulder the responsibilities here. They have the talent and are capable to overcome their weakness provided they can bring about a positive change in their individual performances.
Although UAE team will try hard to grab 2 points and survive here, Pakistan will be eager to build up on the momentum they have gained after their recent victory. The contest could be a close one but we feel that Pakistan has the experience and determination to emerge victorious here. Winner:
