We are now into the final leg of the league stage in the IPL 2022 and things are looking very exciting as the race to the playoffs gets tighter. Only one team - Gujarat Titans is certain to play the playoffs and the fate of seven other sides depends their remaining fixtures.
Up next in the tournament though, we will have things a lot more clearer with Punjab Kings taking on Delhi Capitals in what is a must-win match for both these sides. Both sides are in a pretty similar position, disregarding the net run rate, and a win is imperative for them both to stay in the thick of things. The significance of this match is such that one of the two teams will keep their playoff hopes alive and the other will be staring at an exit post the conclusion of this match.
The match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals is to be played on 16th May 2022 at the D.Y. Patil Cricket Ground, Mumbai.
Punjab Kings may have had an inconsistent run in the tournament but they seem to be getting things right as we are moving ahead. Their stalwarts are performing to potential and they are scoring thumping wins match after match. With all-rounders contributing well, they have an immaculately balanced side that will be looking to replicate the goods on the field too.
As it currently stands on the points table, Punjab Kings are placed seventh on the ladder but a lot will change if they manage to register a win here in this match. They have six wins from 12 matches, aggregating to 12 points in total. Together with that they have a reasonably good net run rate of 0.023, which could come in handy if things get tight towards the end.
Even though the Kings have done well with the ball too, their primary strength lies undoubtedly at the top of the order. With batsmen like Shikhar Dhawan, Jonny Bairstow, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Liam Livingstone, and Mayank Agarwal, they have a batting unit as good as any. Most of their batsmen can clear the ropes at will and that will be an important factor in this upcoming contest. What's more is that with Jitesh Sharma and Rishi Dhawan doing well, they have a batting unit that goes deep.
On the bowling wrong, they have although picked up wickets, they have also been guilty of leaking too many runs. Barring Arshdeep Singh, most of their bowlers have figures with expenses being a bit on the higher side and they will want to do better. Having said that, their batting has enough firepower in the tank to compensate for that. All Punjab Kings would need to do is to play to their potential and if they can do that as well as they did in their last match, getting past them could prove to be incredibly difficult.
Jonny Bairstow, Shikhar Dhawan, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Liam Livingstone, Mayank Agarwal, Jitesh Sharma, Harpreet Brar, Rishi Dhawan, Kagiso Rabada, Rahul Chahar, Arshdeep Singh.
Delhi Capitals have blown hot and cold in the tournament thus far and but they will still be pretty content with the position they are in at the moment. Given their excellent net run rate, they have pretty much walk through to the playoffs if they are able to win both of their remaining two matches. A loss in either of those, however, would pretty much mean curtains if plenty of other permutations and combinations all do not fall their way.
They are slightly above Punjab Kings on the points table, thanks to their superior net run rate, which is 0.210. They too have won 6 out of 12 games and are at the fifth spot at the moment. A win here will push them ahead of the Royal Challengers Bangalore, to the fourth spot on the ladder.
Delhi Capitals have an immaculately balanced side on paper, but much to their disappointment, they have not fired as well as they would have wanted. The presence of Mitchell Marsh in the top three has not only strengthened and extended their batting lineup, it has also helped Capitals with that additional bowling option. On the bowling front though, they have been a tad experience just like their counterparts and it will be interesting to see how they counter that against a side packed with power. If the bowlers are able to do their job, the Capitals certainly have a batting unit to deal the damage and win the match for their side.
The form of their opening pair has been a bit concerning and we suspect a change in that department. Since Prithvi Shaw's absence, they have tried KS Bharat and Mandeep Singh both but without any rewards. A good start will be imperative for the Capitals to get going here and if they get that, their power-packed middle order can certainly send deflate any bowling attack on their day.
David Warner, Sarfaraz Khan, Mitchell Marsh, RR Pant, Lalit Yadav, Rovman Powell, Axar Patel, SN Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Anrich Nortje, Khaleel Ahmed.
Although we have started to see captains electing to bat in the evening games as well, that has varied venue to venue. This is one venue where surface isn't going to change as much and if anything, dew will only make things easier. Given that this is a high-pressure match, captains might be tempted to bat first and put runs on the board. Having said that, we expect them to stick to tried and tested strategy and elect to field first after winning the toss.

This has been one of the better venues to bat at for the batsmen and the numbers show that already. The surface stays true throughout the evening and dew has some impact as well. Having said that, the spinners will be vital to stem the flow of runs and eight good overs of spin can make a difference of about 15-20 runs to the final total. This is a high-pressure match and the runs on the board will matter. A total of around 170 is just about par here and the team batting first will be targeting to score at least 10-15 runs more. Anything less than 170 would be an advantage for team chasing.

With so much riding on the result of this game, needless to say this match is all to play for. Both these sides are coming off thumping wins in their respective last matches and will be brimming with confidence. While there's little to separate the two sides on the basis of form, the Punjab Kings appear a slightly better balanced side between the two. Considering that and the other factors stated above, a bet on Punjab Kings win should be the way to go here.
With Jonny Bairstow doing well, Shikhar Dhawan can breathe a bit free at the top of the order. His role is clearly defined, to accumulate runs and keep one end from collapsing. He still scores at a decent click and is in excellent form. Expect Shikhar Dhawan to score a personal score of at least 23.
David Warner has not been been the best batsman of Delhi Capitals in recent times, he has more or less carried his side single-handedly. He has converted starts to fifties more often than not in the tournament so far and we expect it to happen again. Bet on David Warner to score a fifty here in this match.
While Arshdeep Singh has been the stand-out bowler from the Punjab Kings camp, he has not been amongst the wickets. What he has done is that he has allowed other bowlers an opportunity to pick up wickets. As a result, Rabada has been the lead wicket taker and given what he offers, he is going to enjoy bowling here on this surface as well. Bet on Kagiso Rabada to pick up at least a couple of wickets here.
Liam Livingstone's consistency was under the scanner before the season started but with a couple of match-defining knocks, he has shut his critics quiet. He has hit more sixes than fours and will be looking to take advantage of short side boundaries here. Bet of Livingstone to hit most sixes in this match.
Both these sides have some strong power-hitters who can set the stage on fire once set. Hitting in the air comes naturally to them and so does hitting sixes. Considering that and how the ground dimensions are, a bet on total match sixes to exceed 13 seems to be a pretty lucrative proposition.
