There is a stiff competition amongst the teams placed in the top-four of the points table in the Big Bash League and it isn't too different in the bottom-half of the table as well. Brisbane Heat, Perth Scorchers, and Hobart Hurricanes are tied at the fifth spot with only net run-rate separating them. Up next in the tournament, are Perth Scorchers set to take on Hobart Hurricanes. While the match is unlikely to push either of the sides to the top-four, it would certainly set the tone for the remainder of the tournament. The two teams will lock horns on Sunday, 5th January, at The WACA, Perth.
With two wins from five matches, the Scorchers are placed at the six spot on the ladder, but will rise to the fifth if they manage to register a win in this upcoming fixture. They have a poor net run-rate of 0.629, which they'd love to improve as they tournament progresses.
The Scorchers got off to a decent start to the tournament, winning their second match after losing their opening match to the Sixers. They, however, failed to keep the momentum going as they suffered back to back losses, to the Strikers and to the Sixers. They showed good signs in their previous match as they defeated Brisbane Heat by a pretty big margin of 40-runs.
Batting first, the Scorchers crawled to the total of 149, which wouldn't have been enough on most days, but proved plenty against the Heat. Cameron Bancroft scored a well-compiled fifty that played a vital role in taking Scorchers to a fighting total.
While the match was set up by their batsmen, it was their bowlers who brought the two points home. Barring Chris Jordan, there was no bowler who was hammered around the park. Fawad Ahmed was the pick of their bowlers as he returned with the impressive figures of 3 for 16 in his four overs.
Liam Livingstone, Josh Inglis, CT Bancroft, Mitchell Marsh, Cameron Green, Tim David, Ashton Agar, Chris Jordan, Jhye Richardson, Matthew Kelly, Fawad Ahmed.
Unlike in the last edition of the tournament, the Hurricanes have struggled to get off the blocks in this edition. They got off to a sound start with a win over Sydney Sixers, but have won only one match in the four subsequent fixtures. They are currently placed at the seventh spot, right behind the Scorchers, with four points and a net run-rate of -0.629.
While Hurricanes have a terrific team on paper, the consistency with which they have played so far has been a cause of concern. They looked potent against the Renegades as they cruised to a seven-wicket victory, but failed to repeat the same feat against the Stars and the Heat.
In their recent-most encounter, their bowlers were clobbered all around the park by Chris Lynn and Co. and they were left to chase a towering total of 212. Their batsmen tried hard to hunt the total down, but all their batsmen got starts, but none of those could make it big. They eventually lost the match with a margin of 31 runs.
D'Arcy Short, Caleb Jewell, Ben McDermott, David Miller, GJ Bailey, Simon Milenko, Thomas Rogers, Nathan Ellis, Qais Ahmad, Scott Boland, Riley Meredith.
While the match isn't going to have a major impact on the standings of the two sides, it surely will kick-start the campaign of the winning team. Both the sides have a few problems to deal with and the team that deals with it best is likely to emerge on top tomorrow. Considering how the two sides have done in the tournament so far, Perth Scorchers have done better than Hobart Hurricanes, and are, therefore, our pick to emerge on top in the upcoming encounter.
