The Perth Scorchers continue to remain at the bottom of the BBL League table after losing to Brisbane Heat in their previous game as well. It was a poor performance from a side that has been inexplicably down from previous season. They are now going to host the Melbourne Stars who are in the running to make the playoffs in BBL 08.
The Melbourne Stars have played one game less than every other side and need to win two or maybe even one match from their remaining three to qualify. The Melbourne Stars have been very consistent this season and only ever got on a losing streak when they were missing most of its superstars to the Australian national side.
Playing against the Perth Scorchers at home is not going to be easy but the Melbourne Stars would definitely be targeting a win here.
The Perth Scorchers continued to struggle in their last match even though they now have the Marsh brothers available for selection as well. The problems with their batting just do not seem to go away and they will have another opportunity to rectify them in this match.
The Perth Stadium is a surface where some high totals have been scored and so you never know what total is enough while batting first. For the Perth Scorchers, batting first may actually be better since their batsmen can take their time initially.
Shaun Marsh opened the batting with Josh Inglis in the previous match followed by Cameron Bancroft and Ashton Turner. It is easy to understand why Michael Klinger did not pay the last game. He has been woefully out of form and may not play the next edition of the Big Bash. The Scorchers need to move on from him and this is a perfect opportunity to give the youngsters some chances.
It is unclear if Mitchell Marsh was rested for the previous game because of an injury or for bad form but he should be in the playing eleven if available for selection.
Ashton Turner is one of the batsmen that we would watch out for in this match. He has been having a bit of a lean patch after an excellent start to the BBL. He is going to be facing some military medium bowlers and some spinners which would fall right in his arc.
Nathan Coulter-Nile did not play the last match as the Perth Scorchers opted to try some of their bench strength. We would not be surprised to see Behrendorff or even Tye be rested for this game.
M Klinger, Josh Inglis, CT Bancroft, AJ Turner, Mitchell Marsh, Nick Hobson, Clint Hinchliffe, Nathan Coulter-Nile, AJ Tye, Matthew Kelly, Jason Behrendorff.
The biggest plus for the Melbourne Stars is the fact that Marcus Stoinis was not picked for the Australian playing eleven in the second test against Sri Lanka. As the highest scorer and the joint highest wicket-taker for the Melbourne Stars, Marcus Stoinis is absolutely essential to them winning this match.
Stoinis has been prolific while opening the batting and is able to set up the match for the Stars. His wicket is going to be very important towards the result of the match.
The other batsman that the Melbourne Stars are going to be looking towards is Peter Handscomb. Batting at number three seems to have suited Handscomb very well. He is batting at a higher strike rate and is able to play match defining innings.
In fact, this is one of the things that we like best about the Melbourne Stars. They don’t keep any of their top players cooped up in the dressing room and ‘saving’ them for the crucial moments. They back them and allow them to make the most impact on the match.
This is one of the reasons why the Melbourne Stars have an excellent record in BBL 08. Talking of impact players, Glenn Maxwell has been a bit subdued in this season of the Big Bash. He has not got enough opportunities to have a big impact on the matches and would itching for his chance.
This could be the perfect time for him to explode on the BBL stage.
The bowling for the Melbourne Stars will have to be on its toes. The Perth Scorchers have not had a good time with the bat but there are plenty of good batsmen in the side. Dwayne Bravo, Marcus Stoinis, and Adam Zampa will have to ensure that there are no easy overs for the Scorchers to target.
The Melbourne Stars will want to win this match and get the pressure of qualification off their backs at the earliest.
Ben Dunk, Marcus Stoinis, Peter Handscomb, Glenn Maxwell, Nic Maddinson, Sebastian Gotch, Dwayne Bravo, LE Plunkett, JM Bird, Adam Zampa, D Worrall.

The Big Bash League match between the Perth Scorchers and the Melbourne Stars is going to be played at the Perth Stadium, Perth. The weather forecast for Perth is for clear and sunny skies on match day.
The pitch at the Perth Stadium has been quick and excellent for stroke play. The batsmen like the ball coming on the bat and can score freely. We think a high scoring match is likely with 165 being the bare minimum teams will be aiming for batting first.
The Perth Scorchers have been in poor form and do not really have anything to play for. They are already out of the tournament and that takes away a lot of motivation from the players. The Perth Scorchers may also be keen to try some things looking ahead to the next season. This makes it ideal for a full strength Melbourne Stars side to take advantage.
Back the Melbourne Stars to win.
