PER vs SYD Match Prediction - Jan 28, 2023

This is the matchup we’ve been waiting for, with the Sixers battling the Scorchers in the Qualifier match. This means that the winning team will get a ticket straight to the Final, and the loser will play in the Challenger match with another shot to get to the last game.

Bowlers Lance Morris and Jhye Richardson are likely available for Perth, but it seems they’ll be game-time decisions due to recent injuries/sicknesses. Spinner Ashton Agar is already out for the Scorchers as he’s preparing for the Australia Test series against India.

The Sixers will be happy that Steve Smith is playing in this crucial match, although spinners Todd Murphy and Nathan Lyon are unlikely, as Murphy is preparing for the Test and Lyon is managing a knee injury.

PER vs SYD Team Previews

Perth Scorchers

The Scorchers were fantastic in the season with an 11-3 record, but one of those recent losses was to none other than the Sixers by six runs. Perth has a fantastic lineup that can certainly win it all, including stars like Hardie, Inglis, Tye, and Behrendorff. There’s no doubt that the Scorchers will look to batters Hardie (434 total runs) and Inglis (405) to save the day and make major scores.

Perth does have reliable backups like Turner, Bancroft, and Eskinazi, but Hardie and Inglis will still be the two needed to dominate if the Scorchers have a chance to win. It was nice to see Bancroft score 95* against the Renegades, as he was struggling before that.

Bowling won’t be a problem at all for Perth, as even if Richardson and Morris aren’t able to play (reports suggest both are fine), then there are fast bowlers Andrew Tye (24 total wickets) and Jason Behrendorff to attack the Sixers’ batters. Plus, with Steve Smith at the crease for Sydney, it seems Perth will need the bowlers to be laser-focused.

Sydney Sixers

The Sixers finished with a 10-3 record, although one game was a no result, so it could have easily been an 11-3 season. The team wrapped up the BBL with a five-match winning streak and defeated the Scorchers only a few games ago.

Perth has their big-name players, but so too does Sydney, with Smith and Abbott headlining one of the best teams we’ve seen in a long time. Smith has just been outstanding in only four games played in the BBL, making a whopping 328 runs thanks to two centuries.

Smith has a lot of great batters to support him, including Philippe, Silk, Henriques, and Patterson. Philippe is the one batter to watch, as he’s scored a big total of 249 runs, but has struggled lately. If the Sixers can get at least 30-40 from him and others, but let Smith do the heavy scoring, then Sydney is a lock for the win.

Sydney will look to fast bowler Sean Abbott to pick up the wickets, and with 25 this season (best in the BBL), he’s not going to disappoint. Abbott is ruthless with his deliveries and manages to make opposing batters make bad decisions. He took 3/18 against the Scorchers in the last match and can do it again. Plus, there’s O’Keefe and Kerr to help out with the bowling.

PER vs SYD Toss Prediction

The Sixers may choose to bowl first to make use of the pitch and then chase the total.

Pitch and Conditions

The pitch in Perth is typically very bouncy to favour fast bowlers, but the batters can make big scores due to the shorter boundaries and fast outfield. Should be a balanced match.

PER vs SYD Betting Tips

The odds suggest that Perth is the favourite, and it’s not hard to see why, but we think a bet on the Sixers is a smarter choice. For one, the return is much more improved for your money, and secondly, it’s hard to see them losing with Smith and Abbott playing so incredibly well.

The Sixers have a good mix of youth and experience in the team, and we believe that their momentum from the season will carry into this match and help them pick up a victory over the Scorchers. It won’t be easy, as Perth are a tough squad, but the Sixers just seem invincible right now and they have what it takes to get a victory.

Bet on Sydney to win.
