About the Match
Mumbai Indians lock horns against Perth Scorchers with a motive of securing a place in semis on October 2nd 2013. This is the last group league match for both the teams, wherein the result is non-consequential for Perth Scorchers who could bag only 2 points so far, not making it to the next level. However, this is a crucial match for the Mumbai team because if they win this match emphatically, they not only take their points tally to 10 points, but also improve their NRR, thus keeping their semi-final hopes alive. If Otago loses its final match against the Royals then Mumbai gets to fight it out in NRR with Otago who already is having 10 points. Scorchers have nothing to lose and will try to head back home with something to cheer about.
Mumbai Indians have the required ammunition to demolish the Scorchers. Winning the toss and bowling has been the trend in the tournament and it don’t expect it to be different this time too as Mumbai will certainly want to field first and surpass the superior NRR of Otago, thanks to the wonderful knock of 117 by Broom against Scorchers. It will be a tense match for Rohit Sharma and his team, who have the depth in batting and experience to maintain the asking run-rate. The tail-enders need to peak at the right time and Johnson, Pollard, Harbhajan, Ojha and Dhawan will need to maintain their penetrative bowling to make sufficient dent on the Scorchers. All the resources have to collectively perform and achieve the team objective. Mumbai Indians are anxiously waiting to see the outcome of tomorrow’s tie between Otago and Royals wherein if Otago wins, then the team will be tragically left out from the semifinals.
This young Australian team lacks the experience in tackling challenges; the main reason they could not win any match in the group league. However, they do possess the required resources to spoil the plan of the opposing team, provided they analyze the game of the opponent, and exploit the weak points. Katich has very good left –right combinations in batting and fast, medium and spin attack to restrict the scoring rate of the opponent. Voges and Cartwright can accelerate the run rate if Liam Davis and Agar can give a good start, thus making it tough for MI. If they are lucky with the toss, it can get difficult for the other team as has been the case in the tournament so far. This Australian team is expected to play good cricket and will not let Mumbai Indians win this one so easily.
Though the match is just a formality for Scorchers, it is a very important one for Mumbai provided Otago loses the match against Rajasthan Royals. From the recent performances of Royals it looks like Mumbai will definitely have a chance here in which case the NRR would come into play. Mumbai Indians are hungry for a win to keep their semi-final hopes alive and give the perfect farewell to the legendary Sachin Tendulkar who’s playing his last T20 tournament. Mumbai Indians are clear favorites according to the odds, but it might be different on the field as Perth Scorchers are a good team and in T20 nothing can be said before. I’d place my money on Perth Scorchers simply because they have the steam to upset Mumbai and have offer good reward.
