PERW vs SYTW Match Prediction - Oct 22, 2022

It’s the battle of the top vs. the bottom, as the Scorchers (first on the WBBL ladder) take on the Thunder (last on the ladder) in what’s likely to be a lopsided matchup.

The Scorchers are really on fire right now after just beating the Stars for their third straight win, although it was much closer than you’d think. Perth only defeated the Stars with two balls remaining thanks to Beth Mooney’s 35 runs… but a win’s a win.

The Thunder are still searching for their first win of the new WBBL season, but if they keep performing as they did to the Hurricanes and lose by 49 runs, then that elusive victory won’t come easily.

PERW vs SYTW Team Previews

Perth Scorchers Women

Perth just simply keeps on rolling and started this latest season like they ended: by continually winning.

It’s fair to say that the current WBBL champions may have underestimated the Stars and perhaps not played the best cricket of their lives.

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl, the Scorchers dismissed the Stars for only 110 runs and it appeared as if a simple victory was on the horizon. Then… the wickets started piling up for the Scorchers and suddenly the game turned very interesting.

Whether it was just a bowling pitch or every player was out of sorts, but after captain Sophie Devine went for a duck, Chloe Piparo left for one run, and Maddy Green was dismissed for 14, we certainly had a game on our hands.

Beth Mooney practically saved the day with her 35 runs, but when that was the highest score for the Scorchers, you know that this was a match to be quickly forgotten.

Things went down to the wire during the last over, but it was Piepa Cleary’s 15 runs that helped seal the win with only two balls remaining. Talk about a close one!

It was a solid bowling effort from the entire Perth team, but Cleary did help out with the ball as well, as she bowled only two overs but picked up 2/8. Lilly Mills is one to watch, too, as her three overs ended with 2/15.

Sydney Thunder Women

Can the Thunder pick up their first win of the new WBBL campaign? Definitely soon, but it won’t come against the mighty Scorchers.

The Thunder had a poor effort against the Hurricanes in their last game, ending the match with only 95 runs after chasing a target of 144. Opening batter Tammy Beaumont couldn’t help much with four runs, and Amy Jones left with a duck. There was a bit of fight from captain Rachel Haynes (16) and Phoebe Litchfield (28), but the entire team crumbled under pressure and now we’ve got more questions than answers for the Thunder.

The Thunder are hoping to get back the old form from allrounder Sammy-Jo Johnson, who was absolutely instrumental in helping the team win the championship in the 2020/21 season. However, despite a few decent bowling efforts, we’re yet to see her dazzle with the bat just yet.

Losing Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma, as well as dealing with Hannah Darlington’s injury, means that it’s not a lot of fun in the Thunder camp right now. This is the time for Rachel Haynes to prove her captaincy and start putting some wins on the board.

PERW vs SYTW Toss Prediction

The WACA is a bouncy pitch that turns a lot. The team winning the toss will choose to bowl first.

Pitch and Conditions

Pace bowlers love the WACA because of the movement and spring in the pitch. It’s a lovely, sunny day predicted in Perth of 22°C, so conditions are perfect for cricket.

PERW vs SYTW Betting Tips

The Scorchers are just too strong and will roll over the Thunder with ease.

There are some great names on the Sydney team, but there’s not enough cohesiveness to bring it all together.

Perth’s Mooney and Devine will be too much for the Thunder bowlers and we expect this will be yet another victory for the Scorchers. Perth has a 10-6 win record over the Thunder and has secured the last three matchups.

Bet on Perth to win.
