We are finally down to the last coupe of days in the Pakistan Super League's group stage and the competition couldn't have been any better. The difference between the Kings and the Gladiators, placed at second and sixth spots respectively, is of only two points and a lot can still change in the four remaining matches. Multan Sultans, however, still maintain their position at the top of the table and are likely to stay at the top unless they do extremely badly in their remaining matches. They are set to play against Peshawar Zalmi and that match is of massive importance for Peshawar Zalmi, albeit not of as much importance for the Sultans. The match between the two sides is to be played at National Stadium, Karachi.
Peshawar Zalmi haven't had a kind of tournament that Sultans have had, but they aren't pretty far away from qualification either. Peshawar Zalmi are currently placed at the third spot and while they can no longer claim the top of the table position, they can still finish among the top two teams.
They have nine points to their name in eight matches. Their net run-rate of-0.027 looks pretty good and could come in handy should things get close towards the end of the tournament. Any improvement in this would be considered a bonus for them. On paper, the Zalmi have a side that covers all bases and that has been apparent in their last few matches. They lost their previous match to Lahore Qalandars as Ben Dunk slammed their bowlers all around the park. However, they had done pretty well in their earlier matches and they can take those results for motivation.
On paper, Peshawar Zalmi have one of the most complete sides of the tournament, thanks to the kind of all-rounders they have at their disposal. In addition to Kamran Akmal doing well at the top of the order, the likes of Shoaib Malik, Lewsi Gregory, and Carlos Brathwaite have done brilliantly for them. They are a brilliantly balanced side and beating them isn't going to be easy even for the Sultans, who are flying high at the top of the table.
Imam-ul-Haq, Kamran Akmal, Haider Ali, Adil Amin, Umar Amin, Shoaib Malik, Hammad Azam, Wahab Riaz, Hasan Ali, Rahat Ali, Aamir Khan.
The last match of Multan Sultans was washed out due to rain and consequently they are now left with 12 points on the board. While 12 points will still be enough to take them through to the playoffs, those many points do not ensure their top of the table position, just yet. Another win, however, would push them to a pretty good position, especially with their stupendous net run-rate, of 1.547, which can be crucial if things get tight towards the end.
The Sultans were once on a rampage, but a couple of back to back washouts has certainly slowed their chariot down. Before the two washouts, the Sultans had lost only one match and that should give Multan Sultans plenty of confidence for the next match. With Shan Masood, James Vince, and Rilee Rossouw in terrific touch, the Sultans could give a tough time to any bowling attack in the competiton.
Alongside their power-packed batting order, they have a pretty have a terrific bowling attack consisting of veterans like Imran Tahir and Sohail Tanvir. All in all, going by the performance so far and the team on paper, the Sultans are a side that can be dangerous to deal with in the upcoming encounter.
Shan Masood, RS Bopara, Moeen Ali, Rohail Nazir, Zeeshan Ashraf, Khushdil Shah, SMSK Afridi, Ali Shafiq, Mohammad Irfan, S Tanvir, Imran Tahir.
It is an important game for Peshawar Zalmi as a win here will give them a chance to finish at the top of the table. Multan Sultans have already secured a top-two finish and we expect them to rest a couple of their key players. Considering that as well as the strength of the team from Peshawar, betting on a Zalmi win would be the way to go here.
